City News Service

Even as drizzle dampened the streets of La Jolla Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service was issuing red flag warnings for later in the day in the the mountains and inland valleys of San Diego County.

The National Weather Service declared red flag warnings for the mountains from 5 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, and from 11 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday for the inland valleys.

A red flag warning is issued when strong gusty winds combine with very low humidity to pose a high risk of wildfire.

According to the Weather Service, northwest winds of between 15 and 30 miles per hour gusting up to 55 mph were in store for mountain areas. The humidity level in the mountains will be below 15 percent by this afternoon, dropping to around 5 percent overnight, the agency advised.

The inland valleys later today were expected to be lashed by 15-25-mph northeast winds, with gusts of up to 50 mph. The humidity will fall below 15 percent in the inland valleys, NWS forecasters said.
