UCSD team looking for patients, parents for childhood obesity study

Press Release

Principal investigator Kerri Boutelle, Ph.D., and colleagues at the UC San Diego School of Medicine Center for Obesity Treatment are seeking patients to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral parent-only treatment for childhood obesity through the Family, Responsibility, Education, Support & Health or FRESH study.

Recent data suggest that 31 percent of children in the U.S. are either overweight or obese and these children are at a greater risk for adult obesity and negative health and psychosocial consequences in childhood and adulthood. One potential opportunity for improving childhood obesity treatment is to intervene with the parents, without child involvement.

The FRESH study will also evaluate the cost effectiveness of a parent-only group as compared to the parent and child group, with results of the study used as data to recommend changes in the standard treatment for childhood obesity. The FRESH study is looking for overweight children who are 8-12 years old and who have at least one overweight parent willing to participate.

For more information, please call (858) 822-2158 for the “FRESH study” or email
