A Guadalupe fur seal discovered in nearly comatose condition two months ago at Torrey Pines State Beach was returned to the Pacific Ocean with a satellite transmitter attached, SeaWorld San Diego officials announced today.
"Buddy'' weighed just 11 pounds when he was rescued on March 12, but his weight doubled and he demonstrated an ability to forage for food on his own. He was treated for hypoglycemia, hypothermia and severe malnutrition.
The seal swam 15 miles to the west in the 24 hours since Thursday's release, which SeaWorld officials consider to be a good sign. The satellite tracking data will show scientists where the threatened seal species travels.
So far this year, 42 marine mammals nursed back to health at SeaWorld have been returned to the sea.
