Robert Ellsworth, 84, U.S. diplomat, husband of associate rector, dies

Robert Fred Ellsworth, 84, a former U.S. diplomat who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Nato from 1969 to 1971, died Monday, May 9 just after 6 p.m., said his wife, The Rev. Eleanor Ellsworth, Sr., associate Rector of St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church of La Jolla.

She announced that two memorial services are being planned, one at St. James by-the-Sea and another in Maryland.

Ellsworth was born June 11, 1926.

Ellsworth also served as a Republican member of Congress from Kansas for three terms, according to Wikipedia.  He was also Deputy Secretary of Defense and assistant to the President during the Nixon Administration.

In 1946, he graduated form the University of Kansas where he was a member of the Alpha Nu chapter of Beta Theta Pi.
