The 16th-ranked UC San Diego softball team captured the No.1 overall seed in the West Region for the NCAA Division II Women’s Softball Championship, it was announced Sunday evening. The California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season champions will open the tournament against eighth-seeded Central Washington (33-14) on Friday at noon.

Joining the Tritons in their half of the West Region is host No. 4 Chico State (29-17) and No. 5 Western Washington (36-14). Chico State and Western will face off on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The double-elimination tournament will continue with three games on Saturday, with times set for 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. The championship is on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and an if-necessary contest at 1:30 p.m. All contests will be played at University Softball Field on the campus of Chico State.

CWU won its second straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship and is making its second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championship. The Wildcats set school and GNAC records with 70 home runs so far this season. The school is ranked second nationally in home runs per game as of last week.

After missing the postseason in 2010, UCSD will be making its fifth appearance at the NCAA Championship at the Division II level. The Tritons' 34 wins during the regular season match the school record and the team set a school record for the highest win-percentage (.755) since moving to Division II. The Tritons are 2-8 in NCAA games since 2001, going 1-2 in their last appearance in 2009.

Defending National Champion Hawaii Pacific (37-10) earned the No. 2 seed and will host the second half of the West Region competition. HPU will open play against No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino (32-22), who received an at-large selection despite not earning a spot in the CCAA Tournament. No. 3 Sonoma State (36-20) and No. 6 Dixie State (33-12) are set to face each other in the opening round in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

The winners of each site will collide at the Super Regionals, May 20-21, to determine the champion of the West Region and decide who will be one of the final eight teams left in May 26-30’s National Championships in Salem, Va.
