An ill elephant seal reported on the beach at La Jolla Cove Tuesday about 3:30 p.m. was rescued by Sea World and taken back to the marine park for treatment.
“We determined it was dyhydrated,” said Dave Koontz, Sea World’s director of communications. “It was lethargic and had some weepy eyes. We’re stabilizing it, hydrating it giving it an I.V.”
Koontz said a vet would examine the marine mammal later today and do tests to assess its condition. “They’ll probably take a blood sample,” he said.
He added the distressed animal was reported both by lifeguards and a private citizen on the park’s hotline.
Koontz said the elephant seal was believed to be 10 months to a year old. It is about 4 feet long and weighs about 90 pounds.
