Electric vehicle charging stations coming to SD County

Hundreds of charging stations for electric vehicles are going to start sprouting up around San Diego County over the next several months, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said Thursday.

"By this fall, San Diego will have about 1,000 charging stations in the region,'' the mayor said.

The number of stations, which will be at public venues, businesses and residences, will "remove the convenience barrier'" and worries about range from people trying to decide whether to purchase an electric vehicle, such as a Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt, Sanders said.

The plan to determine locations was developed by the San Diego Association of Governments, and the installations will be made by San Francisco-based ECOtality.

The company said 10 of its Blink Pedestal'' charging stations are now operational in Balboa Park, including the parking lot behind the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and near the Air and Space Museum.

Jim Avery, a senior vice president with San Diego Gas & Electric, said rates to fill vehicle batteries with electricity will be "a small fraction of the gasoline equivalent.'' His own costs in driving an electric car are about 75 percent lower than with his old gas-powered vehicle, he said.
