City crews are working today to replace a 60-foot section of metal pipe along West Muirlands Drive around the spot where the street caved in on Thursday.

The work will continue throughout the day, and although they are hopeful the replacement can be completed today, it’s possible they may have to return Saturday morning to repave the section of street, said Bill Harris, spokesman for the city’s storm water division.

“We hope to have the street reopened today,” he added.

The 24-inch corrugated metal pipe is the type that has caused problems for many municipalities around the country, he added, noting that it erodes from the inside out and was banned in 1992.

He said the crews arrived in the neighborhood early Friday morning to begin working on the sewer line. The hole in front of 1110 West Muirlands was covered with steel plates Thursday night.

The gap, once merely a dip which neighbors have been complaining about for several months, began growing at midday Thursday and became a hole by about 5 p.m.

Traffic was funneled down to one lane as a single worker maneuvered steel plates over the fissure.
