Small La Jolla sewer spill intercepted, causes no damage

Mop up from a small sewage spill at Virginia Way and High Avenue caused by clogged sewer pipes on Monday has been completed.

“That was cleared in about an hour after the spill,” said Brian Drummy, senior public information officer for the city’s Public Utilities Department. “The spill went down the storm drain but we had pumps that intercepted that flow and put it back into the sewer system, so it did not reach the ocean.”

The incident occurred just before noon when water from the La Jolla Reservoir washed down the street into a construction site where a city contractor was working on the sewer system. Sewer pipes clogged by sand and debris apparently caused the leak at Virgina Way and High Avenue, Drummy said.
