Council approves funding for veteran housing in San Diego

By City News Service

A project to construct a building to house veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was unanimously approved Tuesday by the San Diego City Council.

The city will spend about $1.1 million in redevelopment funds to help fund the project at the Veterans Village of San Diego, at 4141 Pacific Highway.

The 12,772-square-foot building will house two dozen veterans on the verge of homelessness, along with classroom space.

The VVSD, a nonprofit agency supported by local, state and federal government agencies, currently has 320 beds and also operates a winter shelter.

Construction is expected to begin in April, with the first veterans scheduled to move in around August of next year.
