DUI arrests, traffic deaths down over New Years's weekend

One person was killed and 60 arrests for suspicion of drunken driving were made in San Diego County over the New Year's holiday weekend, a decrease from last year, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

The lone fatality occurred on New Year's Day at 1:29 a.m. when pedestrian Kelly Condel McPherson, 53, was hit by a driver suspected of drunken driving along the 9300 block of Murray Drive in La Mesa. McPherson died on the scene.

Last year, three fatalities were reported and 101 drunken driving arrests were made on roads patrolled by the CHP, CHP Officer Jesse Udovich reported.

Arrest statistics do not include numbers from local jurisdictions, but fatalities are combined totals.

The maximum enforcement period for the New Year's holiday started 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight on Sunday.
