County launches campaign to encourage healthy living

San Diego County officials on Monday announced broadcast and Internet campaign to get area residents to shed some pounds.

Advertisements on radio and television will provide information on how to get healthy food and where to find walking and bicycle paths. Officials are also setting up a Web site called

The county Health and Human Services Agency estimates 1.6 million residents are overweight.

"Access to healthy choices, including healthy activities, is essential to prevent obesity," said Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, who also heads the Healthy Works leadership team. "The county is committed to make the necessary changes to improve the health and well-being of local residents.''

The program is funded by a $16 million federal grant.
