A taxi plowed down a sidewalk crowded with people leaving a Gaslamp District bar at closing time today, injuring about 25 people, including a woman who lost her lower leg.
The carnage and screaming people prompted bystanders to attack the cab. Bouncers from the nearby Stingaree Nightclub waded into the melee to separate the crowd from the driver, a 40 or 50 year old man who suffered a broken nose.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said four people were critically injured. Earlier reports from police indicated six critical injuries.
San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said the driver of the Emerald cab later told officers he blacked out moments before the cab sped south on Sixth Street approaching Island Avenue at 1:50 a.m., and drove onto the sidewalcrowded with patrons leaving the Stingaree Nightclub.
Of the 25 injured, 23 were rushed to area hospitals. Battrick said most of the injuries were minor.
