La Jolla Country Day School’s talented twin guards, Maya and Malina Hood, ended their college recruiting process recently when they announced they would attend the University of San Diego after they complete their senior years at Country Day. The highly recruited 5-foot-10 Hood twins have been two of the best girls basketball players in San Diego the past two seasons.
According to LJCD head coach Terri Bamford, the twin seniors have the ability to make plays around the rim, get through passing lanes and knock down perimeter jumpers. The twins were a dominant force this summer helping their team, La Jolla Country Day-Wiggins Waves win two tournament championships — the July 14-17 San Diego Classic Elite Division title and The Best of Maryland tournament.
Maya had the honor of being named MVP of the San Diego Elite Classic Tournament, while Malina was recognized for her outstanding perimeter performance at the Best of Maryland Tournament. Both were named to the All-Tournament Team at the Nike EOT and USJN/NIKE 17U National Championship.
Last season, they helped lead the Torreys to the SDSCIF Division IV title and advanced to the state tournament where they eventually lost in the CIF Division IV Regional to Windward (Los Angeles). Had they won that game, they would have advanced to the state championship game in Sacramento.
