The third annual Fall Fest, set for noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 24, on Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla Shores will be what the first two have been: a wholesome, neighborhood event.
"We're going to have fun — it's a community event for the kids," said Terry Winn-Kraszewski about the Halloween-themed event sponsored by the La Jolla Shores Merchants Microdistrict. This year it will include a children's costume parade. "We're hoping people will stick around and have dinner in the restaurants afterward."
La Jolla Shores Merchant District board member Noelle Wojdowski said admission once again will entitle participants to "passports" redeemable for goodies at participating local shops, including Ocean Girl, Rusty Surfboards La Jolla, Yogurt Escape, Osteria Romantica and the Cheese Shop.
The open-house style event meant to promote shops and restaurants along the Shores commercial strip will feature ample food samples from local restaurants, raffles for prizes donated by local businesses and lots of giveaways — candy, pens, magnets and the like.
There will be plenty for people of all ages to do, especially children, who will be treated to face painting, a jumpee, clowns and a "Perfect Wave" picture op.
Festivities will include live music by three local musicians, Hullabaloo band for kids, the Blonde Brothers and folk-oriented Molly Jenson.
No alcohol will be allowed on the street during the event.
Participating merchants will have chairs in front of their businesses or at Laureate Park if their business isn't accessible.
A portion of event proceeds will go to the Friends of La Jolla Shores to further clean up and beautify Avenida de la Playa.
Tickets for the event are $5 in advance, $10 the day of the event.
Event volunteers are needed before, during and after the fall fest for clean up. Those interested should contact Noelle Wojdowski at (619) 840-3482 or e-mail
