The Children's School, an independent primary school serving toddlers through grade 8, is hosting grand opening ceremonies including a ribbon cutting and tour of its new campus Friday, Sept. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 2225 Torrey Pines Road.
"We've just added on a whole new middle school campus for our 7th and 8th graders," said Brian Oliphant, new head of school at Children's. "It's 16,000 square feet of new buildings on a part of our 6-acre campus here in La Jolla Shores."
Oliphant noted the new campus has three new science labs, new classrooms and a top-of-the-line music lab. "We have 17 keyboards connected to a computer so it's high-tech," he said. "Kids can actually compose their own music."
Founded in 1972 as a pioneer in progressive education, The Children's School was founded by a group of educators focused on developing the whole child. School founders believed in accomplishing this through a hands-on curriculum rich in academics, social development, art and physical education.
"The social and emotional development of the child is a very strong focus here," said Oliphant. "It's a collaborative-learning, project-based, child-centered education."
The school's curriculum and educational philosophy drew inspiration from the work of numerous scholars including John Dewey, Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Lev Vygotsky and Howard Gardner.
Oliphant said the school, which is limited to 262 students, now has 250 with the recent addition of its 7th and 8th grades. It has a 1-to-10 ratio of instructors to students.
