Four used San Diego Trolley cars were sold to the Mendoza province in Argentina for $1.2 million, the Metropolitan Transit System announced Thursday.
The light rail vehicles have been in operation in San Diego on the Blue Line for 20 years and have more than two million miles on them, according to MTS.
The cars are being sold to Mendoza for $300,000 each for use on its light rail system. When new, the vehicles collectively cost $1.22 million.
The four cars will be trucked to Houston, where they will be put on a ship for Buenos Aires.
MTS plans to replace its fleet of 71 U-2 model light rail transit vehicles with new S-70 low-floor cars, which will begin arriving in San Diego next year.
Mendoza plans to purchase a total of 11 of the U-2 cars from MTS, which is also talking to other transit agencies about selling the remaining vehicles.
