Tough games against top teams, that is what playing in holiday tournaments are all about. For La Jolla Country Day, both the boys and girls team’s lost for the first time during the past week thanks in large part to stepping up their competition.

For the girls — who are ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps — fell short in the Nike Tournament in Phoenix last week against Etiwanda, 61-59. Etiwanda has an enrollment of roughly 3,300 students and competes in the CIF Southern Section.  Despite the loss, the Torreys are currently 9-1 on the season and are led by sophomore Kelsey Plum, who averages nearly 19 points per game.

As for the boys, they lost their first game of the season to Ralston Valley, 56-41, on the road in Arvada, Colo.  The boys’ team is currently 7-2 on the season and are led by sophomore Sage Burmeister and junior Frank Bamford, both who average nearly 12 points per game.
