For four years, The Gillispie School fourth grade classes have worked with the San Diego Food Bank to create awareness about hunger in the area. This year the 29 students in the two classrooms, along with their teachers and numerous parent volunteers, toured the Food Bank and helped to package over 11,000 pounds of broccoli, cauliflower, and lettuce for distribution to families in need.
A few days later the students addressed their peers at their weekly school assembly to explain the great demand for food donations this year. In addition, some of the fourth-grade students signed a work contract with their parents, making minimum wage in return for completing work around the house.
Then they combined their more than $100 in earnings to buy additional food at the local Vons, searching the aisles looking for the best-value and most-needed food items, such as canned meats, fruits, and dry goods. According to the San Diego Food Bank, the 910 pounds of food collected by The Gillispie School will provide over 710 meals for San Diego County families this season.
Combined, the various Food Bank projects are an example of Gillispie’s newly refined community service program, which has been organized by administration and parents. Projects include serving meals to the homeless, clearing non-native weeds along riverbanks, and taking a vow of silence for 24 hours to give symbolic voice to child laborers around the world.
