Jack's La Jolla heavily in debt, former owner declines comment

In a list of the largest delinquent sales and use tax accounts over $100,000 released by the California State Board of Equalization, Wellington Inc., dba Jack’s of La Jolla, was listed, as of Nov. 30, as owing $1,057,050.00.

Bill Berkley, former owner of Jack’s La Jolla, which closed July 30, 2009, refused comment when asked about it or the financial status of Wellington.

The Board of Equalization reported it has received a total of $4.1 million from 31 qualifying taxpayers who came forward to take care of their debts; 21 through installment payment agreements and 10 by making payment in full.

Mike Viscuso, a La Jollan who owns nightclubs in downtown San Diego and Los Angeles, announced in July 2010 that he had negotiated a long-term lease for the former Jack’s property at 7863 Girard Ave. which he intends to spend $3 million renovating. Originally scheduled to reopen on Halloween, the opening date for the new establishment, to be known as Mike's,  was pushed back until New Year’s and recently again until spring 2011.

Viscuso acquired a little over 18,000 square feet of space in 55 percent of the multi-level building site including a ground-level  coffee shop on Girard, the entire 2nd floor and mezzanine level and the entire 3rd floor for his new corporate offices which he’s already moved into. Besides the coffee shop, his plans include two casual dining concepts and a fine dining concept with an entertainment element.
