Towering crane at fisheries construction site bothers neighbors

La Jolla Shores residents have registered complaints at recent community meetings about the visual impacts of a towering construction boom at work on the new Southwest Marine Fisheries building on La Jolla Shores Drive.

Officials said the large boom is needed to excavate the hillside for underground parking so when finished the project does not block views.

In September 2009, ground was broken on two research buildings that were paid for in part with more than $100 million in economic stimulus funds allocated to build the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Southwest Fisheries Science Center at UCSD.

The 120,000-square-foot facility will house up to 300 employees, a laboratory, office and support space, and a large sea- and fresh-water Ocean Technology Development Tank. It is scheduled to be completed in October 2011.
