North Coast Repertory Theater chose "Casablanca" - one of the most popular movies of all time - as the theme for its annual fundraising gala this year. The event, held at the Del Mar Marriott, transformed the hotel ballroom into a 1940s-style supper club (complete with cigarette girls) for "Rick's Supper Club - An Evening in Casablanca."
Since live performance is the troupe's stock and trade, an appearance by Obie Award-winning singer Yvette Freeman (of TV's "ER") was one of the highlights of the big bash. Freeman stayed on in town after the gala to deliver two performances of "Life and Lives of Dinah Washington" at the company's Solana Beach home.
The evening got off to an early start with a silent auction, followed by a sit-down dinner and dancing to the '40s music of the John Rekevies Band. Not surprisingly, vintage cocktail attire was all the rage. The musicians and the waiters wore fezzes to add to the "Casablanca" look. The honorary committee included avid arts angel Pam Slater-Price and husband Hershell, Esther Nahama, Joseph and Linda Satz, Lawrence and Carol Veit, Arthur and Molli Wagner, Sheila and Jeff Lipinsky, and Sheryl and Harvey White.
Among the many local supporters on the guest list were co-chairs Judy Moffson and Leslie Zwail, Julie and Jay Sarno, Eva Stimson, Iris and Noddy Epstein, Ron and Sue Heller, Susan and Richard Ulevitch and Stuart and Lisa Lipton.
