Revamped show premieres with insights on diabetes

San Diego-based diabetes expert and advocate Dr. Steven Edelman, diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 15, uses his nonprofit organization and video series "Taking Control of Your Diabetes" to empower people to take an active role in their conditions.

Reaching epidemic proportions, diabetes has led to a significant increase in death and costly complications for approximately 26.2 million people nationwide.

Dr. Edelman and his team partnered with UCSD-TV to give the series a new look and add segments on exercise, nutrition and children with diabetes. The first program, "Diabetes Prevention," premieres at 8 p.m. June 24 on UCSD-TV.

The episode focuses on what folks can do to prevent Type 2 diabetes and features interviews with UCSD's Dr. Robert Henry and La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology's Dr. Matthias von Herrath.

The program also marks the debut of TCOYD's fitness expert Larry Verity, Ph.D., and registered dietitian Janice Baker, RD, both based in San Diego, as well as the segment "Kids with Diabetes Say the Sweetest Things," featuring children and teens sharing their experiences.

"Since 1995, TCOYD has held educational conferences and health fairs across the country helping people with diabetes proactively manage their disease and inspiring them to live well," Edelman said. "Our new partnership with UCSD-TV, and its sister satellite channel UCTV, will take us to a new level as far as outreach and online presence. It's an exciting opportunity that will help even more people take control of their diabetes."
