Rob Hixson
As a commercial real estate broker, Rob Hixson has worked the industrial market in the border area for the last 24 years, loyal to CB Richard Ellis. Hixson has served as chapter president for the San Diego County Commercial Association of Realtors and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. For his work as chairman of the Otay Mesa Planning Group for the last eight years, Hixson recently received a community service award from the City Council.

He has been married to his wife, Gina, for 26 years. They have three children: Rob IV, who graduated from his dad's alma mater, UC Davis, last year and started work for CB Richard Ellis in Santiago, Chile; daughter Halsey, who is in her final year at UCLA; and son James, who is a junior at La Jolla High School.

To honor his father, who passed away in 2000, Hixson started the Baja Challenge, an annual one-day house-building event in Tijuana. To date, more than 310 homes have been built and donated. He co-chaired the Viking Vines and Vintner fundraiser for the La Jolla High School Foundation last month.

What brought you to La Jolla?

My wife grew up in La Jolla, I grew up in Orange County, and when we quit farming in El Centro, we moved back to San Diego in 1986.

What makes this town special to you?

It's the people first and weather second. There are wonderful people who live full-time or part-time in La Jolla.

If you could snap your fingers and have it done, what might you add, subtract or improve in the area?

I would add the trolley line. I know we have buses, but public transportation linking us to downtown and the other trolley destinations would be nice.

Who or what inspires you?

When I was younger, I had a strong group of mentors, many of who have passed away now. I have a good group of friends who I study the Bible with, make wine with, and build houses in Mexico for the homeless with. They inspire me to be a good citizen. My brother-in-laws are all leaders of the businesses they are in and offer sage advice.

If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite?

My father died in 2000 and my father in law, Jack Frager, about three years ago. If I had the chance to have dinner with them again, that would be special. One grandfather was in the advertising business in Los Angeles and the other was the inventor of wing tip fuel tanks for airplanes, also from Los Angeles; they would be on my list. My mother's grandfather was the mayor of Santa Barbara in the early '20s, I would enjoy meeting him.

Tell us about what you are currently reading.

I just finished John Grishom's short story book, "Ford County." Our Bible Study group is listening to Bill Creasy as we read, and we are in our third year together. My favorite books are "The Power of One," "13 Moons," "Lonesome Dove" and "Thorn Birds."

What is your most-prized possession?

I have my dad's Western saddle and a couple of his shotguns.

What do you do for fun?

For fun, I watch my youngest son play water polo. I make wine, ride a horse, grow tomatoes, keep bees, and I like to travel. (If you make wine, you need to drink it.) I do enjoy my work as a commercial real estate broker.

Please describe your greatest accomplishment.

It's getting two children through University of California colleges and a happy marriage.

What is your motto or philosophy of life?

Do your best. God watches over me. And use your good judgment.
