Drive aids foster teens
The UCSD Foster Youth Workgroup partnered with Soroptimist International of La Jolla for the first Home for the Holidays campaign, which collected items for 18-year-old foster teens beginning life on their own.
The "Just in Time for Foster Youth Donation Drive" was held Nov. 9-20 with collection points across campus. Donated items included pots, pans, small kitchen appliances, desk lamps, laundry baskets and bedding.
Unlike most youth for whom leaving home is a gradual process, foster teens must begin to care for themselves when they turn 18 and "age out" of the foster care system. Without some kind of support, as many as half end up on the street, according to Just in Time statistics. Further donations will be accepted through www.JIT FosterYouth.org.
