80th year for Candlelight Ball
Academy Award-winning actor and La Jolla native Cliff Robertson will be the guest of honor at the 80th Anniversary Ruby Jubilee Candlelight Ball on Dec. 5 at the Grand Del Mar. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla.
Betty Knight Scripps, philanthropist and newspaper heiress, is serving as general chairwoman of the ball for the seventh consecutive year.
"The celebration of the Candlelight Ball serves as a reminder to the community about the extraordinary health care that is provided by Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, as well as setting a greater financial challenge to the community to support these lifesaving medical endeavors," Scripps said.
Guests will be treated to gourmet dining, dancing to The Bob Hardwick Sound and spectacular holiday decor, according to organizers.
Candlelight Ball's history in support of the hospital dates back to the hospital's start, when it was as a small, but vital community hospital with 44 beds, an operating room, X-ray room and delivery room. Today, it is a 372-bed hospital staffed by more than 900 physicians and 2,200 employees.

Book event with a knit twist
Author Kate Jacobs has a new Friday Night Knitting Club novel out, "Knit the Season." To promote it, she will be at the Warwick's Books and Bites luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at Burgundy Grill & Wine Bar, 830 Kline St., La Jolla, asking guests to bring along knitted or crocheted hats for the local homeless. Jacobs has teamed up with Lands End and Warming Families to make as many as 25,000 hats for displaced people across the country.
With more than 1 million copies in print (and with a movie starring and produced by actress/knitter Julia Roberts in the works from Universal Pictures), The Friday Night Knitting Club has become a phenomenon.
Poet laureate comes to town
Jack Prelutsky will read from "Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant" at 9 a.m. Nov. 6 in the auditorium of The Children's School, 2225 Torrey Pines Lane, La Jolla. The event is open to the public.
Known for his witty wordsmithing and matter-of-fact sense of humor, Prelutsky served as the inaugural Children's Poet Laureate 2006-2008, recognition awarded him by the Poetry Foundation. He is the author and editor of more than 35 books of "mischievous and musical poetry."
Prelutsky's voice at The Children's School event will add life to his fanciful collection of animals that are part animal/part inanimate object, including "umbrellaphants" that sport umbrellas for trunks, "alarmadillos" that have alarm clocks for bodies, and "ballpoint penguins" that can write with their beaks.
The students have been studying Prelutsky and poetry as part of their writers workshops. According to Julie Lee, assistant head of school, the first-graders are particularly excited about Prelutsky's visit. They've incorporated art, music and literature to come up with their own imaginative poems, including one they set to music, which they will perform before Prelutsky's reading. The first-graders will also attend an exhibit at The New Children's Museum in downtown San Diego called "Animal Art," which explores how and why animals spark human creativity.
Many students plan to attend a special joint performance by Prelutsky and the San Diego Symphony at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at Symphony Hall, part of the annual family series.
Prelutsky's visit was arranged by Lisa Stefanacci, owner of The Book Works in Del Mar and a TCS parent. A limited number of copies of "Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant" will be available for purchase at the event, and Prelutsky will autograph them.
