On Thursday, June 5, sixth-grade students at The Children's School presented a check for $1,400 to St. Vincent de Paul. The funds were raised during a three-week loose change drive organized by the class. After spending the spring semester doing a comprehensive study of homelessness, poverty and basic human needs, the class chose St. Vincent de Paul as the charity they would most like to support because of the depth and breadth of services it provides as well as the number of individuals it serves.
The sixth graders became interested in the issue as a result of their observations and conversations about homeless individuals in La Jolla near the school.
St. Vincent de Paul will use the funds for physical therapy programs for homeless children who have delayed motor functions.
