Woods off to good start, Paolucci ends at 2-under

Tiger Woods shot a 3-under 69 during the first round of the Farmer’s Insurance Open, while local Anthony Paolucci carded a 2-under. The leader after the first day was South Korea’s Sung-hoon Kang, who scorched Torrey Pines North for an 8-under-par 64. John Daly and Phil Mickelson each finished with a 5-under 67.

Sanders optimistic about new Chargers stadium in San Diego

A spokesman for San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said Wednesday he expects progress to be made this year toward building a new downtown stadium for the San Diego Chargers. No fatal flaws have been found at the proposed site near Petco Park, according to mayoral spokesman Darren Pudgil. The site seems to be “the most feasible at this time,” Pudgil said.

Anthony Paolucci, who attends La Jolla Country Day and lives in Del Mar, earned a sponsors’ exemption to play in the event at Torrey Pines Golf Course. He has committed to USC to play collegiately. Anthony Paolucci has made a name for himself already in the golf world as he was named the Rolex Junior Golfer of the Year last fall, an honor designated for golf’s best national player among 12- to 18-year-olds.

Chargers looking for new defensive coordinator as Rivera departs for Carolina

San Diego Chargers Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera was named head coach of the Carolina Panthers today. Head Coach Turner and the Chargers now will begin the process of finding a new defensive coordinator.

Chargers place Gates on ‘Reserve-Injured’

The San Diego Chargers have signed fullback Billy Latsko and placed tight end Antonio Gates on “Reserve-Injured.” Latsko spent most of the last three seasons on the practice squad with Carolina and San Diego. The Chargers signed him to the active roster for seven games in ’08 but he has yet to play his first NFL snap.

Blackout lifted: Chargers-49ers game will be broadcast in San Diego

The television blackout was lifted Tuesday for Thursday’s football game at Qualcomm Stadium pitting the Chargers against the San Francisco 49ers. Before a 24-hour extension, granted by the National Football League, was up late Tuesday, the local team had sold enough tickets to allow the game to be televised on Fox 5 San Diego, according to the Chargers.

Chargers, Chiefs game will be broadcast locally

It isn’t a sellout yet, but the Chargers football game against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday will be televised locally. The team reported that enough tickets had been sold to lift the NFL television blackout rule, which states that home games that are not sold out can’t be televised in a team’s market.

San Diego officials disappointed with World Cup decision

City officials expressed disappointment Thursday that the United States was not selected for any of soccer’s World Cup tournaments through 2022, meaning San Diego won’t host any of the games.
