Young surfers join WindanSea tradition

More than 125 youngsters gave it their all on Sunday at La Jolla Shores in the annual Menehune & Junior Surf Contest. The event has been a WindanSea Surf Club tradition since the early 1960s, growing from a roster of 44 contestants to its current size, with competition in both shortboard and longboard divisions, according to age.

On Sept. 16, La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club marked the day with the 19th Annual Bob Litchfield Invitational Cove Swim benefiting the San Pasqual Academy, the county’s only residential school for foster teens.

Entry deadline extended for La Jolla youth surf contest

The application deadline for the WindanSea Menehune and Junior Surf Contest has been extended to Sept. 24. The event, with divisions for boys and girls of all ages up to 16, will be held Oct. 2 at La Jolla Shores.

Ventura masters swimmers hit La Jolla Cove after 202-mile world record attempt

A team of six swimmers – sans wetsuits – from the Ventura County Masters swim club landed at La Jolla Cove with an apparent world record open water relay swim for the distance covered. They swam continuously for 202 statute miles.

Runners against cancer wanted

While the seasoned swimmers tackled either a one-mile or three-mile course in Sunday’s 80th La Jolla Rough Water Swim, juniors braved the chilly waters for a 250-yard swim.

If La Jolla’s coastal dampness has messed up your car, take time to head down to La Jolla Methodist Church on Sept. 18 to get it washed by the La Jolla High cheerleaders. The church is at 6063 La Jolla Blvd.

September has many opportunities for La Jollans to swim for a cause

Three major community swims are happening this month kicked off by the granddaddy of them all, the 80th annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim. The Sunday, Sept. 12, event is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants young and old.

La Jolla soccer tourney draws 3,000 youths

More than 3,000 young soccer players from under 8 teams to under 19s played throughout La Jolla and nearby neighborhoods over the Labor Day weekend in the second La Jolla Labor Day Classic. Finals were played on Monday at Muirlands Middle School and Allen Field.

Surfing goes to the dogs

I have known a few great surfing dogs through the years. One that I remember very well was Ajax. Ajax belonged to San Diego surfing legend Skip Frye.
