The San Diego Surf Soccer Club Girls Academy II U10 team won the 2013 West Coast Fútbol Classic Championship for Flight 2 played in San Clemente and Mission Viejo, Aug. 17-18.

SoCal United U-12 won the Volkswagen Junior Masters National Soccer Championship on July 31, after a three- day tourney played in Kansas. The boys will be heading to Rome, Italy, as the U.S. representatives in 2014 International Championships.

Team Nomads Muñoz scores big at San Diego Surf Cup soccer tournament in Del Mar

The Soccerloco San Diego Surf Cup, held at the san Diego Polo Club fields in Del Mar, July 27-29 and Aug. 3-5, had many local teams vying for a first place trophy. Yet despite a surprising loss to Hawaii’s Abunai 04 Navy in their first game of the tournament, U-10 boys team Nomads Muñoz, of the La Jolla-based Nomads soccer Club, came back to defeat a San Diego Surf Academy team, 2-1, in the championship and bring home the win in their division.

Youth Baseball a Jolla Pony All Stars captured the PONY Regional banner by defeating Chula Vista North at their home field on July 17. With that win, the La Jolla team earned the No. 1 seed going into the Super Regionals in Lakeside, Calif.

San Diego Surf Soccer Club Girls Academy II U10 won the 2013 Albion Cup Championship in July. The girls had a great tournament, scoring 21 goals and allowing just two goals in five undefeated games in the Cup group.

La Jollan is U18 European baseball champ and MVP

Giovanni Garbella, who attended Bird Rock Elementary and Muirlands Middle school and now attends Cathedral Catholic High school, played for the Italian National team that won the European Junior U18 Baseball Championship held in Prague, Czech Republic recently.

La Jolla Longboard invitational to mark 20th year ‘Surfing for a Cure’

A surfer and one-time San Diegan, Kary Mullis, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993 for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction, considered one of the monumental scientific techniques of the 20th century.
That year, Mullis also became the founding honorary chair of the Luau and Longboard Invitational, a benefit for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center that unites two passions in San Diego: surfing and science.
