La Jolla Youth Baseball opens its 2014 season


It was a picture perfect day for La Jolla Youth Baseball as president Jim Benham emceed a down-home kick-off to the 2014 season on March 15. Highlights included the National Anthem sung by La Jolla High School senior Vaill D’Angelo (third year running); a ceremonial First Pitch thrown out by Jim Weaver (who played in LJYB in 1950s, managed in the 1970s, and is now parent of twin Pinto players Louis and Alexander); and the official League photo taken on Bronco Field in Cliffridge Park.

La Jolla High School’s Varsity Baseball team hosted a clinic for La Jolla Youth Baseball’s Bronco and Pony players (ages 11-14) on March 9. A dozen Varsity players and six coaches under the direction of Head Coach Gary Frank organized a two-and-a-half hour clinic with multiple infield and outfield drills, base running instruction, pitching and catching sessions, and seven hitting stations with individual instruction. Some 35 LJYB players participated and got a feel for how things operate at the high school level, playing on the LJHS state-of-the-art field, hanging out in the varsity clubhouse, and having a debrief in the home dugout.

The La Jolla High School Lady Vikings, not at all star-struck by playing in the CIF Finals at Jenny Craig Pavilion at USD, led by 10 points with minutes to play in the third quarter. But Coach Dave Westhem’s crew couldn’t hold on, dropping a 51-48 decision to Central Union High Spartans of Imperial Valley in Division III March 8.

Girls Water Polo: Bishop’s Knights triumph over La Jolla Vikings, 7-4

The Bishop’s School girls water polo team, while regaining their edge, also regained their dominance over arch rival La Jolla High, posting a convincing 7-4 win Jan. 30 in their home pool.

La Jolla Youth Lacrosse Club recruiting boys and girls for spring season

The La Jolla Lacrosse Club is expanding quickly, and it’s not just for boys or experienced players. The club has options for boys and girls in grades K-8, as well clinics and teams for both new and competitive players.

Bishop’s lose early lead, end in tie against Kearny, 3-3

The Bishop’s School boys soccer team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over visiting Kearny and seemed well on the way to victory dec. 10. but such are the fortunes and unpredictability of high school sports that the Kearny Komets scored three straight goals in a nine-minute span to start the second half, and forced the Bishop’s Knights to settle for a 3-3 tie in a non-league encounter.

La Jolla students ride the waves into Scholastic Surf Series

The Scholastic Surf Series (SSS), a division of the Western Surfing Association for middle to high school students, had some high-ranking representation from La Jolla students at recent matches. With five events total, leading up to the SSS State Championships, the teams from Muirlands Middle School, La Jolla High School and La Jolla Country Day School each competed in at least one event, scoring well as a team.

On a sunny October day in South Carolina, one team shined above 15 other competitors at the 2013 USTA Junior Team Tennis 14 & Under Advanced National Championships.

‘One Shot at a Time’ : La Jolla junior golfer competes in state championship

La Jolla High School junior Daniela Anastasi just returned from competing at the CIF State Championship in golf where she placed 37th. She is also the first female golfer to make it to the state level from La Jolla High School.

La Jolla Vikings fall to league champs, 3-1

What happens when a young, inexperienced team looking up collides with CIF reorganization of playoff divisions by past performance rather than school enrollment? The La Jolla’s girls volleyball team gets caught in the rotors of the San Dieguito Mustang Avocado League champs, losing 3-1 in the first round of the CIF playoffs Nov. 13.
