“All Hands On Deck!” is the call for January at La Jolla Youth Baseball. Behind the scenes, the board and League presidents have been working for a couple of months getting registration set up, facilities organized, uniforms ordered and sponsors engaged. When registration closed on Jan. 14, nearly 400 players, ages 5-14, were committed to play on 40 teams in five divisions.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. In 2012, the La Jolla Lacrosse Club saw its numbers grow from 80 to more than 140 elementary and middle school players (grades 1-8). Registration for Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 tryouts is required by Jan. 31.

Members and friends of the La Jolla Cove Swim Club welcomed 2013 at the 35th annual Polar Bear Plunge, Jan. 1. Hundreds of spirited swimmers (and some in costume) took to the La Jolla shoreline, followed by a potluck and chili party.

As LJYB gears up for its 61st season, a core group of volunteer board members are canvassing the parents of recent registrants, seeking help with coaching teams, serving as team parents, and raising funds for equipment and field support. With older facilities that are owned by the City of San Diego, there are endless maintenance and repair projects, not to mention the upkeep of some of the most beautiful baseball diamonds in the region.
Last month LJYB was the lucky recipient of Jamie Abrams’ time, talent and treasure. Abrams and his merry band of Troop 4 Boy Scouts, descended upon the Pony field like a well-oiled machine. Two years ago, Abrams was a star player on the field, only this time he was on a mission to complete his Eagle Scout Project.

La Jolla Youth Baseball is open for online registration at www.LJYB.org until Jan. 14, 2013. Early registration is encouraged so the league has a handle on how many teams will be formed in each division, how many managers and coaches are needed, and how many requisite sponsorships are required to support the volunteer-driven 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.
