
The La Jolla Youth Baseball season comes to a close Saturday, May 18 with championship games in the Pinto, Mustang and Bronco divisions. Shetland doesn’t have playoffs, but a lot of kids will play post-season games on tournament teams. Pony schedules its inter-league playoffs over the Memorial Day weekend at Tecolote.

The last few weeks of the La Jolla Youth Baseball season are full of come-from-behind victories, spectacular plays and timely home runs. The season ends May 10 and playoffs take place the following week with a league- wide Championship Day and Closing Ceremonies on May 18 at the Cliffridge Park fields. Our guest teams always compliment us on the excellent grounds that are carefully maintained, and say LJYB is a gracious host to the other leagues.

On Sunday we ran the 32nd La Jolla Half Marathon. They say it’s one of the toughest half marathons in the United States. There is no doubt it is certainly challenging, but also ruggedly beautiful and worth the effort that goes into training for this event. The 13.1 course starts at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and ends at La Jolla Cove.

A quick update on the La Jolla Half Marathon on Sunday, April 28, 2013 from the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the tragedy in Boston and their families. We are working diligently with our partners in law enforcement and public safety and will be taking appropriate measures depending on developing information from local and federal authorities.

Every team makes the playoffs in La Jolla Youth Baseball. How teams prepare for the end of the season is as different as the 37 coaches we have in our league. Some develop more pitchers and catchers all season, while others move players all around the defensive positions to make sure improvement is the goal.

La Jolla Shores Surfing Association is accepting applications for its annual Menehune Surf Contest on April 20 at La Jolla Shores. The deadline for registration is April 13.

It has been a couple of weeks since the glow of Opening Day, and the new Padres uniforms have some grass stains on them. The kids have been having a lot of fun around the La Jolla Youth Baseball fields.

Barbara Held and Steve Cross of La Jolla Sunrise Rotary coordinated the 2013 Rotary Swimarathon on Feb. 23, 2013 at La Jolla Cove, linking their 52 participants with more than 15,000 swimmers from 250 Rotary Clubs worldwide — all to raise funds and awareness for the fight against polio.

The La Jolla Youth Baseball (LJYB) League held its Opening Day on March 2, 2013 at Cliffridge Park. LJYB President Jim Benham emceed events, which included welcoming all the parents and families, giving thanks where thanks were due, and introducing San Diego Padres CEO Tom Garfinkel. Noting that the young athletes were wearing authentic Padres uniforms supplied by the Padres organization, Benham asked, “How cool is it for these kids to dress up in an actual big league uniform?” and he thanked Garfinkel for outfitting the kids.

“All Hands On Deck!” is the call for January at La Jolla Youth Baseball. Behind the scenes, the board and League presidents have been working for a couple of months getting registration set up, facilities organized, uniforms ordered and sponsors engaged. When registration closed on Jan. 14, nearly 400 players, ages 5-14, were committed to play on 40 teams in five divisions.
