La Jolla Community Foundation hosted a holiday party at George’s At The Cove on Nov. 21, 2013 to celebrate its members, its achievements and its plans for the future. At the event, Foundation Board Chair and La Jolla Light Vice President and General Manager Phyllis Pfeiffer recognized several members for their efforts on behalf of the foundation, and revealed that the 12th mural in the Murals of La Jolla collection had just gone up on the wall facing Jonathan’s Market. Foundation Executive Director Julie Bronstein announced that the organization is looking forward to implementing its “Partners In Grime” initiative to beautify and clean up the streets of La Jolla.
St. Germaine Children’s Charity, a private, nonprofit dedicated to ending the destructive cycle of child abuse, hosted its members and friends for Coffee and Conversation, Oct. 29, 2013 at the La Jolla home of Lisa Betyar and her husband, Karl Walter, owner of Old Venice Restaurant in Point Loma. The couple catered the event and welcomed speakers Annie Petersen, CEO of Association for Human-Animal Bond Studies; and Carol Davis of Paws’itive Teams and her therapy dog, Kiwi.
Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla hosted its annual gala, “On the Track to Discovery,” on Nov. 2, 2013 at the Del Mar Country Club. The event’s honorary co-chairs were Roberta Burnham, Pauline Foster and Madeleine Pickens. The gala featured the merriment and inspirational spirit of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and celebrated the lives of two Institute luminaries, Board leader Duane Roth and co-founder Lillian Fishman. The lead sponsor was Life Technologies, Inc., and with support from gala patrons, $2.1 million was raised for biomedical research.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County hosted its 51st annual Gourmet Dinner on Oct. 24, 2013 at Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, where James Brennan, CEO of Enlightened Hospitality Group, was recognized as its “Person of the Year.” Brennan is a former Big Brother and a long-time board member. The night began with cocktails and seafood, sponsored by Donovan’s, and a silent auction with 50 items. The program that followed was emceed by celebrity chef Brian Malarkey and included a live auction of 10 incredible experiences, an address from Brennan, an inspiring video, and a cigar and brandy after-party.
The National Cheers Foundation, based in La Jolla, hosted its first gala, Fanta Sea En Masque, Oct. 26, 2013 at the Scripps Forum. The benefit raised funds to support non-profit women’s health advocacy groups and programs in San Diego. The gala entrance featured a Hall of Mirrors. Once inside, guests viewed Triton’s Treasures from local artists, feasted on dinner inside a magic genie bottle, and heard musical entertainment by NRG.
San Diego Symphony’s OPUS 2013 gala Oct. 12 began with pre-concert cocktails and hors d’oeuvres sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels, which had models presenting its jewelry. Dinner followed at the University Club atop the Symphony Towers. The evening continued downstairs at Copley Symphony Hall where Kevin Cole performed George Gershwin’s American classic “Rhapsody in Blue” with the San Diego Symphony, conducted by San Diego Symphony Music Director Jahja Ling. The evening culminated with dancing, desserts and games of chance back upstairs at the University Club.
La Jollans just couldn’t wait and got in the Halloween spirit early with events throughout the community. On Oct. 22, 2013 Warwick’s Books hosted a pirate party, where young swashbucklers heard stories and got to search for treasure. On Oct. 24, the La Jolla Shores Fall Fest brought out kids of all ages for games, music, candy collecting and more. Once there, families got to see the spook-tacular decorations at Barbarella. Muttropolis also hosted its annual Howl-O-Ween costume contest on Oct. 25 and it featured 43 canine contestants.
Organizers report that $1.25 million was raised at the 11th annual Voices for Children’s Starry Starry Night gala on Sept. 28, 2013 at Rancho Valencia Resort. The funds will be used to provide more than 400 more foster children with CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates). These volunteers work directly with the children, speaking on their behalf in the courtroom and community.
UC San Diego’s 10th annual “Dinner in the Library” was held Sept. 12, 2013 in the Geisel Library building. The evening’s festivities included a presentation by author, poet and critic Jay Parini on “Books That Changed America.” The Geisel Citation for Library Philanthropy was presented to John A. Berol, who as founding member of the University Librarian’s Advisory Board, provided consistent philanthropic support to the libraries, including the establishment of the June Waterous Berol Reading Lounge in the Biomedical Library building. Event proceeds will support UCSD libraries’ most pressing needs, including collections, resources and services.
Sept. 25, 2013 was a night “To Dine For” at the Crosby Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe when 16 top-flight restaurants served up edible delights to go with the luxury settings provided by 16 home décor showrooms and galleries. Among the participants were some of La Jolla’s finest: Roche Bobois, Esteban Interiors, Marso Collection and Tuo Sogno Design on Girard, Hake Kitchen & Bar on Prospect, and the Mediterranean Room at La Valencia Hotel.
