Singer Katharine McPhee, who was the “American Idol” runner-up in Season 5 (2006) and has gone on to record several albums and perform on stage and screen, was the guest star at the 18th annual Symphony at Salk benefit Aug. 24, 2013 at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla. The fundraiser began with a Champagne reception, followed by dinner and the concert, which also featured music by members of the San Diego Symphony under the director of guest conductor Thomas Wilkins.
San Diego’s largest dog-friendly, black-tie event, the 27th annual Fur Ball, took place Aug. 17, 2013 at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA on Gaines Street. Nearly 700 people and 300 canine friends attended the gala to raise money in support of animal welfare programs and services. The evening included a cocktail reception, opportunity drawing, music, silent and live auctions, and entertainment. A touching program celebrating the animals and programs of the Humane Society accompanied a gourmet meal prepared by Chef Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille.
Some 50 La Jollans embraced the Aloha spirit at the annual senior luau Aug. 16, 2013 at the La Jolla Recreation Center. Attendees dressed in tropical clothing to enjoy Hawaiian music, dinner and lots of dancing. Two couples in particular were honored — Bob and Carol Larkin, and Roland and Joan Bleu — for celebrating 50 years of marriage this month.
Neighbors gathered to enjoy a summer evening at the Bird Rock Community Council’s annual summer picnic on Aug. 13, 2013 at Calumet Park in La Jolla. The event was co-hosted by Beaumont’s Eatery with plenty of food, drink and smiles on hand.
It was a beautiful day for the 20th annual Luau and Longboard Invitational on Aug. 18, 2013 at Scripps Pier, which featured some of the biggest names in surfing teaming up with amateurs to raise research funds for the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. I’m not sure how much money was netted, but the mai tais were flowing, and the bidders were bidding! What a great group of people!
A benefit for education, support and financial assistance to families with infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) throughout San Diego was held Aug. 10, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. The Miracle Babies Casino Royale soiree featured food, drinks, Monte Carlo-style gaming and silent and live auctions.
La Jolla Music Society presented its SummerFest Gala, “A Midsummer Night,” on Aug. 10, 2013 at the home of Hanna and Mark Gleiberman. Chaired by Peggy Preuss, the evening featured a cocktail reception and dinner with an intimate chamber music performance by SummerFest artists Philippe Quint, Michelle Kim, Eric Wong, Felix Umansky, Steven Lin and SummerFest Music Director Cho-liang Lin. Proceeds will benefit the music society’s education, outreach and artistic programs.
From the south side of Chicago rose the 1970s-’80s classic-rock band, Styx, who performed some of their hits, like “Come Sail Away,” at the 6th annual Rock the Cure concert Aug. 4, 2013. The outdoor event was held at the La Jolla cliffside residence of Lisa and Steve Altman (president of Qualcomm) to raise funds for Type 1 pediatric diabetes research at UC San Diego. Last year’s event raised $565,000. Some of San Diego’s top restaurants were on hand with staff serving appetizers and cocktails.
Las Patronas presented its 67th annual Jewel Ball, “Lucky 13,” Aug. 3 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Guests partook of cocktails, appetizers, a silent auction, and then had dinner before dancing under the stars to the music of Wayne Foster Entertainment. Las Patronas provides financial assistance to nonprofit organizations in San Diego that provide community services in health, education, social services and cultural arts to enhance the quality of life for all.
Some 50 senior citizens hung out and hung ten in surf attire as they danced, played games and dined on a catered barbecue dinner at La Jolla Rotary’s annual summer party for residents at the League House, July 21, 2013 at 7465 Olivetas Ave. The Rotary has put the party together for the Social Service League for the past 10 years, surprising guests with a unique and playful theme each summer.
