Just in Time for Foster Youth held its annual gala benefit, Walk the Talk, March 22, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The evening featured a performance by country music star Jimmy Wayne. Philanthropists Stephen and Lynne Doyle were honored for their work with former foster youth.

“Burning Red” was the theme of The Foundation of La Jolla High School’s annual fundraising gala, which took place March 22, 2014 at Green Acre on Campus Point in University City. Merriment at the Burning Red Gala Bash included food, drinks, auctions and dancing to music by The Jones Revival band.

A sunny spring-like day greeted guests on March 6 to the Village Garden Club of La Jolla’s annual Meet the Master presentation at The Auditorium at TSRI. Floral master Eddie Zaratsian — designer to the stars — took the stage for an inspiring lecture and demonstration of his world-class floral treatments. A reception followed in the courtyard, which was catered by The Wild Thyme Company.

The event celebrated February’s opera buffa, “The Elixir of Love,” by Donizetti, and heralded the upcoming Verdi masterpiece on power and friendship, “A Masked Ball” with 2014 performances March 8, 11, 14 and 16 at the Civic Theatre, 1100 Third Ave., downtown San Diego.

There was a full house at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla’s Sherwood Auditorium on the evening of Feb. 1, 2014 when Christo came onstage for a lecture/slide show about his 50-plus years of grand-scale public art. Some of the crowd had been standing in line for hours, hoping for no-shows’ seats.

The 105th anniversary of the Charity Ball took place Feb. 8, 2014 at Hotel Del Coronado to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The “From the Heart” gala featured dinner and dancing to raise funds for the hospital’s cardiovascular intensive care unit. To staff and equip the CVICU for its first year, Rady Children’s must make an investment of $2.5 million; additional funds are needed to sustain annual costs.

Sylvia and David Geffen honored at Sapphire Jubilee gala in La Jolla to support Seacrest Village Retirement Communities

The Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities held its 36th annual Sapphire Jubilee gala at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, honoring philanthropists Sylvia and David Geffen. The event was attended by 350 guests, and with the help of its auction, raised more than $350,000 for charitable care for residents who, due to illness or injury, have exhausted their financial resources. Seacrest Village Retirement Communities in Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo have been serving the community in the Jewish tradition since 1944.

San Diego Jewish Film Festival fetes sponsors at special screening in La Jolla

Hundreds of San Diego Jewish Film Festival underwriters gathered at the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture’s Garfield Theater in La Jolla on Feb. 5, 2014 for a special screening of “Neil Diamond: A Solitary Man,” a BBC documentary. The event was part of the 24th annual San Diego Jewish Film Festival.

La Jolla Community Center’s jazz series going strong; next concert Friday, Feb. 28

“Women in Jazz” was the theme of a recent “Fourth Friday Jazz Series featuring Lori Bell & Friends,” Jan. 24 at the La Jolla Community Center. Joining flutist Lori Bell were vocalist Allison Adams-Tucker, pianist Melonie Grinnell and bassist Evona Wascinski. The jazz concert series continues in February, March, April and June 2014.
