Las Patronas distributes $400,000 at beneficiaries’ lunch in La Jolla

The La Jolla-based philanthropy organization Las Patronas held a luncheon at the La Jolla Beach & Tennic Club on Jan. 22 to present the $400,000 it raised (mostly through the annual Jewel Ball) to pre-selected beneficiaries.

The 84th annual Scripps Candlelight Ball took place Dec. 7, 2013 at The Grand Del Mar in Carmel Valley (San Diego). The black-tie affair was held to raise funds for Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla’s Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, which is set to open in 2015. The gala featured dining, dancing and the chance for medical professionals and benefactors to kick back and mingle in the magic of the elegant setting.

St. Germaine Silver Tea in La Jolla raises funds for children’s charities

St. Germaine Children’s Charity held its 30th annual Silver Tea benefit at the home of Claire Reiss in La Jolla Farms, Dec. 10, 2013. The nonprofit helps fund social-service agencies responsible for the care, shelter and treatment of abused and at-risk children from birth to age 18.

As a breast cancer survivor who was also diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, part-time La Jolla resident Ann Romney, wife of presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, has become a health advocate. In support of breast cancer and vision research, she gave the keynote address at a fundraiser holiday high tea, “Visions of Success: From Research to Reality,” hosted by The Vision of Children Foundation, held at The Grand Del Mar.

Christmas Tree Lighting party brings out The Bishop’s School families in La Jolla

The Bishop’s School hosted a Christmas Tree Lighting Party on its quad for the La Jolla community. Families gathered to hear carols by The Bishop’s Singers, Christmas messages from Chaplain Brian Fidler and Head of School Aimeeclaire Roche, and enjoy holiday treats. There was also a collection of gift cards donated to teens from the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a moment of silence to mark the passing of South African President Nelson Mandela, and a surprise visit from Santa Claus.

The La Jolla Music Society hosted a Flamenco Luncheon at La Valencia Hotel to promote its upcoming Dance Series at Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego. The Society will present three world-class dance troupes in 2014: Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet (Feb. 15); Gala Flamenca (March 13); and Alonzo King Lines Ballet (May 17).

La Jolla and San Diego’s ‘Best Dressed’ raise funds for Miracle Babies

Winners of Leonard Simpson’s “10 Best Dressed Awards” for 2013 were feted at the “Royals and Romanticism of Style” gala, a benefit for Miracle Babies, the San Diego non-profit that provides support to families with critically ill newborns. The 6th annual event, founded by Leonard Simpson and Sally B. Thornton, celebrates philanthropist who dress every day with “gloves of compassion” and a “coat of courage.” The 2013 gala included a runway show, awards ceremony, dinner, dancing and was held Nov. 21 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines.

The Old Globe Theatre’s 2013 gala, “A Magical Evening,” netted more than $1 million for the theater’s artistic and educational activities. Co-chaired by Nina Doede and Sheryl White, the black-tie event was held on The Old Globe’s historic campus in Balboa Park, San Diego.

La Jollans and San Diegans among honorees for Salvation Army’s Women of Dedication

Four La Jollans were among The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary 2014 “Women of Dedication,” selected for their outstanding service work in the community. The honorees were introduced at a Presentation Tea hosted by member Terry Cooper at her La Jolla home. La Jollans Jeanette Day, Cynthia Kronemyer, Mary Mulvihill and Anseth Page Richards, will join 10 other area humanitarians to be feted at the 49th annual Women of Dedication luncheon and fundraiser in April 2014 at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina.
