Voices for Children’s President’s Circle donors came together for a cocktail party at the La Jolla home of VFC board member Jill Skrezyna and her husband Alex Sun. The guest speakers were Juvenile Court Judge Carol Isackson and her daughter, Amy, who for the past two years has served as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer.
Silent, live and wine auctions took center stage April 12 at Anchor’s Aweigh!, the annual fundraiser for The Bishop’s School’s student financial aid and faculty professional growth programs. Guests arrived on campus to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, dinner and an after-party with dancing by Jay Sterling Music. The benefit was co-chaired by Dawn Calvetti, Alice Hayes and Margot Kerr.
Las Patronas, a La Jolla-based grant-giving philanthropy group, gave its members a sneak peek at the décor for this year’s Jewel Ball fundraiser, at a preview event April 30 at the La Jolla Community Center.
Just in Time for Foster Youth held its annual gala benefit, Walk the Talk, March 22, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The evening featured a performance by country music star Jimmy Wayne. Philanthropists Stephen and Lynne Doyle were honored for their work with former foster youth.
“Burning Red” was the theme of The Foundation of La Jolla High School’s annual fundraising gala, which took place March 22, 2014 at Green Acre on Campus Point in University City. Merriment at the Burning Red Gala Bash included food, drinks, auctions and dancing to music by The Jones Revival band.
Several women from La Jolla embarked on a trip to India last November to see how the programs implemented by San Diego-based Project Concern International (PCI) are working out. As financial contributors, they checked out the Vulnerable Children program and they saw how the Women Empowerment Program (WEP) is changing the financial situation for women in rural India.
Iris and Matthew Strauss hosted the San Diego Opera Producers Circle reception on Feb. 19 at their Rancho Santa Fe home. The event celebrated February’s opera buffa, “The Elixir of Love,” by Donizetti, and heralded the upcoming Verdi masterpiece on power and friendship, “A Masked Ball” with 2014 performances March 8, 11, 14 and 16 at the Civic Theatre, 1100 Third Ave., downtown San Diego.
At the 2014 Global Swimarathon Sunday, Feb. 23 at La Jolla Shores, 49 swimmers covered three courses — the original 100-yard course parallel to the beach, an intermediate course, and the XL course to the tip of Scripps Pier. The La Jolla Sunrise Rotary-sponsored event was a fundraiser for the global fight against polio, netting $10,000 for the cause this year. Polio is a crippling disease still endemic in three countries worldwide.
The 105th anniversary of the Charity Ball took place Feb. 8, 2014 at Hotel Del Coronado to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The “From the Heart” gala featured dinner and dancing to raise funds for the hospital’s cardiovascular intensive care unit. To staff and equip the CVICU for its first year, Rady Children’s must make an investment of $2.5 million; additional funds are needed to sustain annual costs.
The Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities held its 36th annual Sapphire Jubilee gala at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, honoring philanthropists Sylvia and David Geffen. The event was attended by 350 guests, and with the help of its auction, raised more than $350,000 for charitable care for residents who, due to illness or injury, have exhausted their financial resources. Seacrest Village Retirement Communities in Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo have been serving the community in the Jewish tradition since 1944.
