La Jolla church will host annual hunger benefit EMPTY BOWLS on May 12

Local potters are busy making the hundreds of unique and beautifully crafted ceramic bowls needed for the annual Empty Bowls event to fight hunger, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at La Jolla United Methodist Church, 6063 La Jolla Blvd. (858) 454-7108. Guests choose a bowl from the hundreds on display for $20, and then have it filled with soups that are catered and donated by area restaurants. After partaking of the simple meal of soup and bread, guests take their bowls home as a reminder their donation has helped to fight hunger in San Diego.

Schoolmates: Many La Jollans help guide inner-city students at Nativity Prep

Tucked away in a neighborhood of San Diego that many La Jollans likely have never visited sits a small school that’s having a big impact on students from some of the city’s less-fortunate neighborhoods. Despite the distance from La Jolla, Nativity Prep Academy has about 200 people living in 92037 who support the middle school on 55th Street either with their time or money.

La Jolla Community Foundation welcomes first director

Since arriving in San Diego from the Midwest during Super Bowl weekend of 1988, Charlene Pryor has forged an impressive résumé in the world of philanthropy and nonprofit giving, serving as senior vice-president of endowments and planned giving at The San Diego Foundation and as director of gift planning for the Zoological Society of San Diego.
Last month, Pryor returned to the San Diego Foundation as senior director of charitable giving, donor experience and engagement, where she will also work part-time to increase philanthropic giving for the nascent La Jolla Community Foundation.

Fashion luncheon to benefit Food Bank backpack program

Fashion Forward and the San Diego Food Bank have teamed up for a second annual luncheon and fashion show Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.

Jewish teens sought for service awards

The deadline is Jan. 6 to nominate a philanthropic Jewish teen for a Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award at www.jewishfed.org/teenawards/process
Teens, ages 13-19, may be nominated by themselves, a teacher, community leader, rabbi, or friend, just not a family member. Their service projects may benefit the general or Jewish community.

Las Patronas honored with Friends of Balboa Park Millennium Award

The Friends of Balboa Park recently presented Las Patronas with the 11th annual Friends of Balboa Park Millennium Award for the nearly $1.5 million Las Patronas has granted to the park and its institutions over the years. Las Patronas was one of two recipients this year, and in recognition of the award, the City and County of San Diego declared Oct. 25, 2011 as “Las Patronas Day.”

Aguerre brothers’ Liquid Nation Ball is not your average fundraiser

Fernando Aguerre has been building bridges since he convinced the Argentinean government to re-legalize surfing in 1978. He builds them as president of the International Surfing Association, bringing surfers together from 70 different countries (many of them at war with one another) to surf together peacefully.

La Jolla student earns community service award

At the youthful age of 17, Liza Gurtin has already dedicated quite a few years to serving her community — and anyone else in need around the world. She was recently recognized for her works with the sizable sum of $36,000, as one of five recipients of the Hellen Diller Family Foundation Tikkun Olam Award. The award is presented annually to California teens who have taken initiative for the betterment of communities in need.
