La Jolla Music Society held its WinterFest Gala 2013, “The Spirit of New Orleans,” with guest stars the venerable Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Trey McIntyre Dance Project on April 20, 2013 at the Horton Grand Hotel in downtown San Diego. Co-chaired by Deirdra Price and Angelina K. Kleinbub, the Mardi Gras-style celebration had guests sampling all the traditions of “Bourbon Street,” to raise money for the education and artistic programs of the La Jolla Music Society.

La Jolla Rotarians, Realtors and teens polish police storefront

Interact Club students Tessa Lowe of La Jolla High School and Emily Halaka of University City High School paint a door at the rear of the police storefront.

The building at 4439 Olney St., which also serves police who patrol La Jolla, provides a place for law enforcement and volunteer senior patrol officers to complete paperwork and take meal breaks.

The annual Baja Knights Auction to benefit The Bishop’s School’s need-based student financial aid and faculty professional growth programs took place April 20, 2013 on the school’s campus in La Jolla. The soiree featured a concert by rocker Sammy Hagar and included live and silent auctions, a wine auction, dinner and dancing.

Father Joe’s Villages start gold and jewelry donation program

Father Joe’s Villages launched a gold and jewelry donation program as another unique way for San Diegans to invest in the community’s future. For decades, Father Joe Carroll has lobbied citizens for donations — “cars, boats, even a plane!” Now, the organization that carries on his legacy is expanding its plea, asking San Diegans to search through their jewelry boxes and donate any pieces that are broken or that they no longer wear.

More than 300 parents, teachers and supporters of La Jolla Elementary School (LJES) busted their best disco moves during a sold-out gala on March 16, 2013 at the Cuvier Club in La Jolla. A fundraiser for Friends of La Jolla Elementary School, Inc., the event featured music from Polyester Express and silent and live auctions that included everything from a trip to Hawaii to the chance for one lucky LJES student to become “principal for a day.”

The Jewish Federation of San Diego County hosted a Major Gifts Cocktail Reception on March 19, 2013 at the La Jolla home of Joan and Irwin Jacobs. About 100 of the community’s most generous givers received a tour of the Jacobs’ art collection, along with an update from Michael Siegal, board chair for the Jewish Federations of North America.

La Jolla High School Foundation hosts Vikings, Vines and Vintners

Supporters turned out en masse for the Vikings, Vines and Vintners fundraiser to benefit La Jolla High School on March 23 at the La Jolla Country Club. More than a dozen wineries provided tastes and wines for bid at the silent auction. Local businesses also donated gift certificates and prizes for auction, which was emceed by radio host and La Jolla High parent Mike Halloran from 91X. Hosted by the Foundation of La Jolla High, this year’s event marked the seventh year for the major fundraiser.

Heart & Soul Gala in La Jolla raises funds for community services

Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) welcomed 450 guests to its annual Heart & Soul Gala on March 16, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla. This year’s theme, Make An Impact, celebrated the accomplishments of Barbara Bry (Girls Give Back), Judy and Mike Feldman (Pachie’s Place), and Charitable Adult Rides & Services, Inc. (CARS), including its CEO Rick Watkins and board of directors. The evening raised some $860,000 to benefit the more than 50 social service programs of JFS.
