‘The Orphan of Zhao’ opening draws crowd to La Jolla Playhouse

The opening night party for “The Orphan of Zhao” July 11, 2014 at La Jolla Playhouse was attended by sponsors, board members and the press with rave reviews coming from all. Some critics have likened the epic tragedy to the Chinese version of “Hamlet,” starring BD Wong. It runs through Aug. 3 on La Jolla Playhouse’s Mandel Weiss stage on the UC San Diego campus.

Kiwanis Club of La Jolla’s 51st annual pancake breakfast July 19, 2014 at La Jolla Recreation Center fed and entertained more than 900 attendees. Noting that the primary purpose of the party is for the community to come out and have a good time, event organizers proclaimed the event a success — especially for the kids under age 10 who can eat for free.

La Jolla YMCA gets new name after $5 million donation

The La Jolla YMCA will get a new look and a new name next year thanks to a $5 million donation from the McKinney family of La Jolla.

The Athenaeum hosted its 25th annual Patron Dinner on June 23, 2014 at the music and arts library, 1008 Wall St. The membership library is home to an ever-expanding collection of books, periodicals, reference material, compact discs, videocassettes, DVDs, sheet music and librettos, as well as a significant collection of artists’ books. The Athenaeum also presents an eclectic, year-round schedule of art exhibitions, concerts (classical, jazz and new music), lectures, studio art classes, tours and special events.

Grants awarded to children’s charities at St. Germaine luncheon in La Jolla

St. Germaine’s annual Membership and Grants Award Luncheon took place June 10, 2014 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. In attendance were outgoing and incoming St. Germaine officers (and a few doing both) plus representatives of 13 San Diego child abuse prevention agencies receiving grant checks. One of these, Hannah’s House, was also chosen to receive the annual Barbara Christensen Heart of San Diego Award.

National Charity League San Diego honors young women from its Ticktockers class of 2014

This year’s National Charity League San Diego graduating class (Ticktockers) included young women who completed the six-year program and were presented at “Once Upon A Time … Her Story Begins,” a celebration in their honor at the Hyatt Aventine during the 2014 Memorial Day weekend.

Saucy sailors, pirates and lasses show up for Meals on Wheels’ Buccaneer Ball in San Diego

Meals on Wheels’ Buccaneer Ball (aka Swashbuckling for San Diego Seniors) was held June 14, 2014 at the San Diego Sheraton Resort and Marina on Harbor Island. Some 300 guests were in attendance to raise $175,000 for the program that brings hot meals to the ill and the elderly. The pirates in attendance partook of a silent auction, cocktails and the 5th annual Chef Appetizer Challenge, and then dinner and dancing.

Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, animal education presentations by Conservation Ambassador Joan Embrey and staff, auctions, a glamorous gourmet dinner from Executive Chef Terry Guise of the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, and dancing the night away to Wayne Foster Entertainment made “Wild Things: A Night in the Savanna” another memorable Rendezvous in the Zoo (RITZ) benefit.

Sondra Berk of La Jolla, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology on June 15, for her leadership and dedication to the Technion and the San Diego community. The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology is a source of the innovation and brainpower that drives the Israeli economy.

Patches of Purple: Village Garden Club of La Jolla salutes donors to jacaranda tree project

If you’ve ever driven past a jacaranda tree blooming with purple flowers throughout La Jolla and San Diego, odds are it was one of the 2,200 planted by the Village Garden Club of La Jolla since its inception in 1986. On June 4, 2014, members of the Village Garden Clubof La Jolla gathered at Kate Sessions Park to publicly recognize the donors who make it possible for the club to purchase, plant and care for the trees.
