PHOTOS: Foreigner concert helps ‘Rock the Cure’ for pediatric diabetes research in La Jolla

Steve and Lisa Altman hosted the legendary rock band, Foreigner, at the annual “Rock the Cure” benefit for Pediatric Diabetes Research Center at UC San Diego on Aug. 10, 2014. The Altmans’ La Jolla home served as the concert venue, and the event also included “a taste of San Diego” with numerous restaurants offering samples of their cuisine. Lisa Altman, Stacey Valencia and Dana Kiffman co-chaired the party under the stars.

A record 700 guests attended the 19th annual Symphony at Salk concert under the stars Aug. 23, 2014 where after cocktails and dinner, they were treated to a stirring performance of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” by Salk Institute for Biological Studies President William R. Brody, M.D., Ph.D., at the piano.

La Jolla student reports on mission to Belize bringing hope, help, happiness to orphans

A La Jolla student accounts a weeklong mission trip to Belize (Central America) earlier this summer. It was sponsored by La Jolla Presbyterian Church with the goal to paint cheerful murals on an orphanage for abused children and build a home for the impoverished 10-member Garcia family.

La Jolla Music Society presented its 2014 SummerFest gala, “A Summer Celebration of Music,” Aug. 9 at the home of Frances and Tom Powell in Rancho Santa Fe. Co-chaired by Jean Shekhter and June Shillman, this year’s gala celebrated the music and culinary delights of Asia.

Weather cancels Las Patronas’ Jewel Ball, but can’t dampen crew’s spirits

Although Las Patronas had to cancel its 68th annual Jewel Ball, “Moonlit Mambo,” at 5 p.m. on the day of its scheduled event, Aug. 2 — due to persistent rains that caused danger from wet electrical wiring, slippery floor surfaces and the threat of lightning — the food was sent back to the Hyatt (frozen), and later distributed to La Jolla charity and 2013 beneficiary “So Others May Eat.”

Old Globe Theatre gala raises funds for artistic programs in San Diego

The Old Globe Theatre hosted its annual gala, “Summer Splendor,” in Balboa Park, San Diego, on July 26, 2014 in support of the theater’s education and artistic programs. The event featured cocktails, dinner and dancing to the 13-piece band Midnight Special, and a performance by Tony Award-winner Laura Benanti, which was based on her hit New York cabaret (and new CD) “In Constant Search of the Right Kind of Attention.”

La Jolla Playhouse patrons party at ‘Ether Dome’ premiere

Pretty in Pink: Fashion designer Zandra Rhodes named a ‘Dame of the British Empire’

Damehood — the female equivalent of knighthood — has been awarded to fashion and textile designer Zandra Rhodes. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth bestowed the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) status upon Rhodes as part of her annual Birthday Honors list.

“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was the theme of the Patrons of the Prado gala on July 12, 2014 in Balboa Park, San Diego. Beatles-inspired music came from Wayne Foster Entertainment. Sandy Redman and Jeanne Jones served as event chairs. 2014’s beneficiaries are the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, San Diego Museum of Art and The Old Globe Theatre.

Torrey Pines (La Jolla) Rotary Club marked its 50th anniversary with a dinner celebration June 28, 2014 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe. Known as the Rotary with the wine club, members have traveled to France and Italy and maintain contacts with Rotarians there. The club often works locally with veterans, military, needy families and its own international projects.
