Meals on Wheels’ Buccaneer Ball (aka Swashbuckling for San Diego Seniors) was held June 14, 2014 at the San Diego Sheraton Resort and Marina on Harbor Island. Some 300 guests were in attendance to raise $175,000 for the program that brings hot meals to the ill and the elderly. The pirates in attendance partook of a silent auction, cocktails and the 5th annual Chef Appetizer Challenge, and then dinner and dancing.
Sumi-e art is all about simplicity, said La Jolla native and artist Lauris Phillips. The strokes are minimal to show the “essence” of a subject. Even the word is simple, when broken down. Sumi means “ink” in Japanese, she said, and adding the –e changes the meaning to “ink painting.”
Award-winning Chef William Bradley — one of only 160 chefs in the world and 17 in the United States to receive the designation of Grand Chef from Relais & Châteaux — is the executive chef and director of Addison, the signature-dining venue at The Grand Del Mar. Bradley recently lent his talent to another eatery operated by the resort: Bijou French Bistro in La Jolla. The new restaurant, which opened June 27 at 1205 Prospect St. (formerly the site of Amaya La Jolla), features classic French bistro fare.
Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, animal education presentations by Conservation Ambassador Joan Embrey and staff, auctions, a glamorous gourmet dinner from Executive Chef Terry Guise of the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, and dancing the night away to Wayne Foster Entertainment made “Wild Things: A Night in the Savanna” another memorable Rendezvous in the Zoo (RITZ) benefit.
La Jolla Newcomers Club hosted a “Summer Blast” party June 8, 2014 at the La Jolla Alta Clubhouse. Members gathered to give a big thank you to the board members and interest group chairs that served this past year and to welcome the new board. The tone of the delightful afternoon was set to music by Essentially Jazz, and chef John Bocuzzi of Verona Bistro prepared a scrumptious Italian dinner.

On June 4, 2014, members of the Village Garden Clubof La Jolla gathered at Kate Sessions Park to publicly recognize the donors who make it possible for the club to purchase, plant and care for the trees.
Grammy winning singer/songwriter Kenny Loggins was the guest performer at the sixth annual “Dream On” concert gala June 9, 2014 at the hilltop home of La Jolla philanthropist Joan Waitt. A benefit for Promises2Kids, the event featured a cocktail reception, live and silent auctions, dinner and music after sunset.
