La Jollans and San Diegans among honorees for Salvation Army’s Women of Dedication

Four La Jollans were among The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary 2014 “Women of Dedication,” selected for their outstanding service work in the community. The honorees were introduced at a Presentation Tea hosted by member Terry Cooper at her La Jolla home. La Jollans Jeanette Day, Cynthia Kronemyer, Mary Mulvihill and Anseth Page Richards, will join 10 other area humanitarians to be feted at the 49th annual Women of Dedication luncheon and fundraiser in April 2014 at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina.

Bird Rock Community Council members meet for holiday party in La Jolla


The Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) held its holiday party Dec. 3, 2013 at Voce del Mare restaurant on La Jolla Boulevard. The BRCC also held its inaugural Winter Walk, 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 along La Jolla Boulevard with live music, interactive art, merchant specials and samples. During the walk, participants had the opportunity to purchase a decorative tile designed by artist Jane Wheeler to help complete the Waverly Wall mosaic in Bird Rock Park. Dozens of women named ‘Barbara’ gather at Barbarella’s Restaurant for toy drive in La Jolla

Women named Barbara from across La Jolla gathered Dec. 4, 2013 at Barbarella’s Restaurant in the Shores for the annual St. Barbara’s Day party and holiday toy drive. The Barbaras were treated to cocktails and appetizers on the restaurant’s patio. In getting to know one another, several of the Barbaras asked after whom they were named. The list included actresses, grandmothers and even one Barbara’s father’s former girlfriend (the one he didn’t marry, but wished he had).

It’s pomp and pageantry at La Jolla’s annual Christmas Parade


Floats, marching bands, cowboys and beauty queens made their way down Girard Avenue in the 56th La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival, Dec. 8, 2013. Local politicians and business owners, along with dance teams, the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and classic cars advanced the parade route with little elves-for-a-day running alongside tossing candy canes to the crowd.

San Diego Chargers president Dean Spanos donates $500,000 to new UCSD Athletic Performance Center in La Jolla

Dean Spanos, chairman of the board and president of the San Diego Chargers, has pledged $500,000 to UC San Diego to support a new Athletic Performance Center. The gift will support the expansion of the existing Alex G. Spanos Training Facility, located at the north end of campus. The revamped facility will be renamed the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center.

Tray Reversal: La Jolla Meals on Wheels treats its volunteers to lunch

Since 1974, volunteer members of the Greater La Jolla Meals on Wheels have been serving nutritious meals to isolated homebound seniors in La Jolla and University City. Seventeen volunteers with La Jolla Meals on Wheels received recognition for their service of five to 30 years at a luncheon event Nov. 14, 2013 at All Hallows Catholic Church.
