La Jolla Playhouse gala marks 30 years of theater excellence

The La Jolla Playhouse Gala on March 29, 2014 celebrated 30 years of groundbreaking theater at the Tony Award-winning institution, since the rebirth of the Playhouse on the UC San Diego campus.

Save Our Heritage Organisation, San Diego County’s historic preservation group, will salute the winners of its 32nd annual People in Preservation (PIP) Awards, 6 p.m. Friday, June 6 at the Sunset Temple event center in North Park. La Jolla is the beneficiary of the ongoing labors of four PIP winners selected by the 2014 jury comprised of landscape architect Amy Hoffman, preservation architect Paul Johnson, and historian and researcher Sarai Johnson.

A Veterans Memorial Service at Miramar National Cemetery is set for 1-2 p.m., Sunday, May 25 at 5795 Nobel Drive, just west of the Marine Corps Air Station, off Miramar Road and I-805.

Trustees of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association will host a special plaque presentation 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, May 26 at the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial, 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive at Via Capri, honoring Sgt. Rafael Peralta, USMC (April 7, 1979-Nov. 15, 2004). This event will mark the first time at the Memorial that all San Diego County Congressional representatives will be in attendance: Congressman Darrell Issa (49th District); Congresswoman Susan Davis (53rd District) Congressman Duncan Hunter (50th District), Congressman Scott Peters (52nd District) and Congressman Juan Vargas (51st District).

All Hallows Academy students in La Jolla raise funds for teen fighting cancer

For the past 10 weeks, All Hallows Academy students blanketed La Jolla streets with lemonade stands, bake sales and rainbow loom bracelet sales to raise money so that Jackson Wagner, a teenage Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor, may attend the 19th annual Celebration of Champions event May 10 at Rady Children’s Hospital.

The 33rd annual UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center Gala, “Spark!” took place April 26 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine to raise funds for the Hospital for Cancer Care at Jacobs Medical Center, opening in 2016. The evening featured a cocktail reception, dinner and performance by R&B singer Heather Headley, followed by dancing.

Voices for Children’s President’s Circle donors came together for a cocktail party at the La Jolla home of VFC board member Jill Skrezyna and her husband Alex Sun. The guest speakers were Juvenile Court Judge Carol Isackson and her daughter, Amy, who for the past two years has served as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer.

The Village Garden Club of La Jolla presented its 12th annual “Expressions in Art and Flowers” event and featured 38 botanical arrangements by club members who drew their inspiration from 38 works of art created by artists in the club.
