Handbags and jackets needed for La Jolla Soroptimist shopping benefit

Soroptimist International of La Jolla seeks donations of purses, ladies jackets, shawls, etc. (in good condition) for its annual Purses Plus Party, which raises funds for agencies that help women and girls lead better lives.

La Jolla fitness studio marks move with community event

Bird Rock Fit has upgraded its space by moving into the former Dearinger Salon (corner of Nautilus and La Jolla Boulevard) to offer its clients greater amenities — more floor space, an outdoor patio, larger changing rooms, shower, private off-street parking, bike rack, free community Zumba parties and more. To commemorate the move, co-owner Ethan Kopsch and his team will host a grand opening celebration, 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

Rotary hosts teen leadership weekend with La Jolla High School teens

Fifteen students from La Jolla High School’s Class of 2014 attended the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference (RYLA) the weekend of April 20. The three-day conference provided the students with leadership training, team-building exercises and fun in the beautiful mountain town of Idyllwild. The students were selected from 35 applicants and were joined by more than 250 leading juniors from throughout San Diego County.

Cheers Foundation hosts Life-Links health lecture at La Jolla High

The National Cheers Foundation, a non-profit women’s health organization based in La Jolla, announced the first of its series of educational Life-Links forums. It is the goal of the group to help bring health education awareness back into the public schools with talks designed to inform and empower women of all ages with a contemporary look at health and body image.

Mail carriers collecting cans of food on Saturday

On Saturday, May 11, mail carriers will pick up food donations for a one-day Stamp Out Hunger food drive for the San Diego food bank. Simply place a bag of non-perishable food out prior to your regular mail delivery service on Saturday.

Female La Jolla merchants unite for Mother’s Day promotion

The women behind the 13 businesses on upper Girard Avenue will offer discounts and promotions from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 11 in honor of Mother’s Day.
For example, Armones Core Connection has a coupon for a free class and a discount on massage, but coupons are subject to availability.

La Jolla Garden Club to hold sale on Saturday

The La Jolla Garden Club will hold its annual Gardeners’ Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, on the patio outside Chase Bank, at 7777 Girard Ave. The potted plants, topiaries, succulent arrangements, baked goods and gift items — all with a garden theme — will be tied with bows, ready to give as Mother’s Day gifts the following morning.
