‘Inga’ column not so funny

Unlike Inga or the aforementioned waiter, I won’t claim to speak for all women, but I will say that when I dine out with a group of girlfriends, we actually read the menu, order for ourselves, remember what we’ve ordered, and – apparently this is the real shocker, since only GUYS do this, right? – Split the check down the middle!

La Jolla All-Stars finish third in Western U.S. Bronco play

The La Jolla Broncos All-Stars run for a championship ended Saturday afternoon when they lost their second game of the double-elimination West Zone tournament to West Covina.

Had they won,they would have moved on to the championship game on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the World Series later in the week.

Women’s tennis qualifying tournament starts in Carlsbad

The qualifying rounds of the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open women’s tennis tournament begins in Carlsbad Saturday.

The tournament, which offers $700,000 in prize money, runs through Aug. 8 at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

Scheduled to compete are stars of women’s tennis including Lindsay Davenport, Nadia Petrova, Jelena Jankovic, Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina, Melanie Oudin and Svetlana Kuznetsova, organizers said.

Half-cent sales tax incease likely to be on ballot

The City Council agreed in principle Friday to ask San Diego voters to approve a temporary half-cent sales tax increase that would be levied only if nearly a dozen financial reform milestones are met.

The City Council voted 6-2 to direct City Attorney Jan Goldsmith to draft the ballot language and conduct a legal analysis.

Woman gives birth in parking lot amidst morning traffic jam

A woman gave birth Thursday while stuck in traffic in the Mount Soledad area because of a multi-vehicle crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Five people were injured in the crash that involved at least four vehicles on Interstate 5, between state Route 52 and Gilman Drive, shortly before 8 a.m.

Classical musicians to perform in Rancho Santa Fe Aug. 5

The America-Israel Cultural Foundation will present a special classical concert featuring pianist Andy Feldbau (Julliard graduate) and violinist Asi Matathias (protege of Pinchas Zukerman) at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at 17515 Circa Oriente St., Fairbanks Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe.

Whooping cough claims life of infant

Whooping cough claimed the life of a San Diego infant this week, officials announced today.

Five-week-old Elias Carrillo died Tuesday evening in an intensive care unit at Rady Children’s Hospital, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

The last local death attributed to pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, was in 2001.

Mayor vetoes move to put new City Hall decision on ballot

Mayor Jerry Sanders on Thursday vetoed the City Council’s vote to place a measure on the November ballot asking San Diego voters to approve a new City Hall.

Sanders made the announcement in a memo to City Clerk Liz Maland.

Sanders said the project’s developer, Gerding-Edlen, requested that the measure be pulled from the Nov. 2 ballot because of a lack of funding for a campaign to get it approved.

Stage set for La Jolla SummerFest

La Jolla’s population gets a bump in August with the arrival of the La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest, which brings more than 70 world-class artists and ensembles to town.

As a special treat for the community, the event features a free opening week concert on Aug. 4 at Scripps Park, in advance of the concerts, open rehearsals, workshops and artist encounters that take place Aug. 6-27.

‘Midsummer’ holds sweet dreams for theatergoers

With a track record of hits sustained by its artists, it’s not surprising the La Jolla Playhouse could take a script that’s four centuries old and craft it into an evening of entertainment those in attendance will remember long after leaving the theater. Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” has never been so extraordinarily delightful.
