UC San Diego’s percussion ensemble, Red Fish Blue Fish, directed by Steven Schick, will give a rare performance of Gerard Grisey’s “Le Noir de l’Etoile,” with six performers spread among the audience to provide complete immersion in sound, 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Mandeville Auditorium on campus. Inspired by the 1967 discovery of pulsars (pulsing radio waves from massive stars that disintegrated eons ago), Grisey composed the work in 1989 for his son. Tickets: $15.50, free to students. High school student talent show is Friday in La Jolla.

The Rotary Club of La Jolla presents its annual scholarship fundraiser, Stars in Our Eyes, 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at La Jolla High School’s Parker Auditorium, 750 Nautilus St. The event showcases performance and visual arts talent from four area high schools — La Jolla High, The Bishop’s School, The Preuss School and La Jolla Country Day. An art exhibit and reception follows.

The Social Service League of La Jolla will celebrate Bastille Day, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 in the Rose Garden of

Athenaeum art exhibit opening and annual Festival of the Arts top the offerings for Best Bets in and around La Jolla, June 21-30

The Athenaeum will host a public opening for “Scriptorium: Devout Exercises of the Heart,” an exhibition by Robert Kushner in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Friday, June 22 at 1008 Wall St. The exhibit consists of hundreds of small drawings and paintings executed on pages of old books and manuscript, which will be pinned to the wall with simple dressmaker’s pins. The pages have been removed from discarded and damaged books from America, England, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Tibet and Japan circa 1500-1920. La Jolla High drama department presents Grease this weekend.

La Jolla High School’s spring musical, “Grease,” may well be the one that you want to see March 15-17 as juniors Truly Bailey and Giovanni Moujaes tackle the lead roles Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko. Join them and Kevin Cruz as Kenickie, Maddy Harvey as Rizzo, and featuring Andy Hill and Hallie Bodenstab rocking to hits like “Born to Hand Jive,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Beauty School Dropout.” Directed by drama department adviser Anne Boutelle, the show takes the Parker Auditorium stage at 7 p.m. 750 Nautilus St. Tickets: $7-$15.

Charles Hartford, a Bronze Star recipient, will talk about his adventures during 19 years in the Army in the next installment of The Riford Center’s Distinguished Speaker Series, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29. A West Point graduate who also holds master’s degrees in history, diplomacy and international commerce, Hartford led the ground convoy portion in the rescue of an American prisoner of war in Iraq. Cats, cats and more cats will be performing — REALLY! — Feb. 16-19 at the Jewish Community Center’s Garfield Theater when feline behavioral expert Samantha Martin brings the Amazing Acro-Cats to town. Watch the circus-like cats ride skateboards, walk tightropes and jump through hoops.
