UCSD's Theatre and Dance Department's 2009-10 season begins with two productions - the evocative drama "Topdog/Underdog," and an original dance theater collaboration, "Sexual Selection."

In announcing the season, department Chair Allyson Green said audiences would see diverse works ranging from Chekhov to Garcia Lorca, produced by "the outstanding talents of the department's renowned training program."

- "Topdog/Underdog," Nov. 10-14, The Arthur Wagner Theatre. Winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama by Suzan-Lori Parks, the play chronicles the lives of two African-American brothers as they attempt to cope with women, work, poverty, gambling, racism and their troubled upbringings while engaged in a deadly game of verbal chance. Tickets available for the Nov. 12-13 shows; (858) 534-4574.

- "Sexual Selection: Shakespeare and Darwin Ponder Love," conceived, directed and choreographed by Kim Rubinstein and Yolande Snaith, Nov. 16-21, Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre.

- "House of Bernarda Alba," Nov. 19-29, Shank Theatre. Three of five sisters hunger for the same man in this explosive drama that revolves around a woman who controls her five daughters and her mother in a house bereft of men.

- "Camino Real," Nov. 23-Dec. 5, Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. In Tennessee Williams' drama, a paralyzed community faces fractured dreams and fear of the future.

- "la mandragola" by Niccolo Machiavelli, Jan. 28-Feb. 6.

- "The Revenger's Tragedy," Feb. 11-20, based on Thomas Middleton's 16th-century bloodlust melodrama.

- "The Seagull," Feb. 18-27 by Anton Chekhov.

- "Marriage, Medicine, Money and Mayhem," French farces by Moliere and Feydeau, Feb. 24-27.

- "Winter Works," second-year MFA Dance Theatre choreographers, March 11 -13.

- "Baldwin New Play Festival," April 14-24.

- "Spring Moves!" Undergraduate dancers, April 29-May 1.

- "Seven Against Thebes," by Aeschylus. May 13-22.

- "New Directions," first-year MFA Dance Theatre choreographers, June 3-5.

The seven stage shows in the Forum and Potiker theaters are available on season subscription for $56-$105.
