In Arts: Azar Lawrence Quartet at Anthology
Jul 2, 2008

As this month begins, the Fourth of July may be on the minds of most. There are, however, many more events happening this week and throughout the month. From vegetation hikes at Daley Ranch to the closing acts at the Old Globe, there are plenty of events to mark on your calendar.

Jazz at Anthology
Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra perform Latin jazz tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at San Diego's newer, upscale super and music club. Azar Lawrence Quartet channels its inner John Coltrane on Sunday and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis plays hard-swinging jazz Tuesday. Howard Jones, Rita Coolidge and Arturo Sandoval perform later in the month. More information: (619) 595-0300.

Snorkel at La Jolla Cove
Ever wonder what a garibaldi or lobster's house looks like? Saturday through Aug. 2, Birch Aquarium invites snorkelers to explore their dwellings and all that lies beneath at La Jolla Cove. Participants must be at least intermediate swimmers and supply their own gear. Previous snorkeling experience is recommended. Ages 10 and older (ages 10 to 13 must be accompanied by an adult). $25- $30. More information: (858) 534-7336.

Daley Ranch naturalist hikes
Throughout the month, naturalists at Daley Ranch in Escondido lead slow, intermediate and fast-paced hikes while educating hikers about the surroundings. A shuttle with handicap accessibility runs on Sundays. Hikes include: "Red-diamond Rattlesnakes" Saturday, "Stroll Around the Ranch" Tuesday and July 29, "Endangered Plants and Animals - We Are Their Guests" July 12, "Vegetation and Views" July 13, "Having Fun on the Trails" July and "Ladies Hike" July 31. Free. More information: (760) 839-4680.

'The Pleasure of His Company'
This comedy about a debutante (Erin Chambers) in hopes of having her absentee father attend her wedding runs July 12 through Aug. 10 at The Old Globe. Things get testy when Dad (Patrick Page) tries to upstage his daughter's fiance (Matt Biedel). $42-$64. More information: (619) 234-5623.
