Fybel wins honor Gary G. Fybel, chief executive of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, was awarded the American College of Healthcare Executives Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Award.
The award is presented to a chief executive officer or other senior-level executive in recognition of significant contributions toward the achievement of the goals of the organization and the advancement of health care management excellence.
Fybel has been the chief executive for Scripps La Jolla since September 2000.

CHI elects vice chairman George A. Scangos, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Exelixis Inc., was elected to serve as vice chairman of the California Healthcare Institute.
As vice chairman, Scangos will be next in line to serve as chairman of the board after the term of current Chairman John C. Martin, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Gilead Sciences, which ends in January.
Athena names award winners Athena San Diego, a professional organization for women in San Diego's technology, engineering, health care, defense, life sciences and services sectors, last week announced the winners of the 11th annual Pinnacle Awards.
The awards recognize individuals, an educator and a company who support the Athena mission.
Winners were: Bioscience - Brenda Gebler, vice president of housing at AMN Healthcare in Del Mar Heights; Technology - Pamela Surko, director of research for public programs, UCSD Global Connect; Services - Karen Hernandez, Cooley Godward Kronish, University Towne Center; Corporate - Cooley Godward Kronish.
Nancy Taylor, science coordinator/curriculum specialist K-12 for the San Diego County Office of Education, won the educator's award.
In addition, the special Athena awards went to Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Angela Salinas, Stan Sewitch of HRG KI Investments and Deborah Jondall.
Athena also presented scholarships to Ronit Abramson, Canyon Crest Academy; Nadia Farjood, Torrey Pines High School; Sydney Thayer, Francis W. Parker School; Hurnan Vongsachang, San Marcos High School; and Lauren Wong, Santa Fe Christian School.
WIST event planned The biennial "Women in Science and Technology" conference will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
Hosted by the Association for Women in Science, the conference--formerly known as "Women in bioScience" - will encompass topics interesting to all women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Keynote speakers will be Maria Freire, president of The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, and Karen McBride, program executive for the Mars Scout Program. Freire is an internationally recognized expert in technology commercialization; formerly, she was chief executive officer and president of the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance), directed the Office of Technology Transfer at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), and established and headed the Office of Technology Development at the University of Maryland.
McBride has more than 16 years of experience in the exploration of Mars and the outer solar system. She worked with UCLA as manager of the White Mountain Research Station in Bishop, and has held leadership positions in many projects for NASA often in collaboration with UCLA, including the Pathfinder mission to Mars.
Symposium set for May 14 The annual Women in Business Symposium returns to Del Mar for the 10th year on May 14.
Successful women and entrepreneurs from around the county will attend the event, set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
