Hair salon helps veterans Kim Yadich at Sport Clips' La Jolla cuts the hair of Brice Jacoby of Del Mar on Veterans Day. All of the chain's salons in the county donated $1 from each haircut that day for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Operation Uplink.
Surf Diva duo honored Izzy (Elizabeth) and Coco (Carolyn) Tihanyi, co-owners of Surf Diva Inc., a La Jolla Shores surf school and clothing store, were among those saluted in a new display at UCSD. The Alumni Association and Student Affairs Division launched "Walk the Walk" to showcase outstanding alumni. Blue and gold banners highlighted the individuals. The Tihanyis were listed along with others, including MP3.com founder Michael Robertson and Nobel prize winner Susumu Tonegawa.
Campbell gets group's post John Campbell, general manager of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, recently was elected secretary/treasurer for the American Hotel & Lodging Association.
A 25-year veteran of the hotel and resort industry, he's in line to be the group's chairman in 2010.
Campbell is a past president of the California Hotel & Lodging Association and of the California Restaurant Association San Diego.
Scripps marks center's growth The Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine marked the beginning of its phase II expansion with an event on Oct. 27 attended by, among others, Martin and Carol Dickinson, Claudia Skaggs Luttrell, and Barbara and Terry Gooding.
The expansion will add more than 23,000 square-feet to extend the healing environment at the center on the campus of Scripps Clinic in La Jolla.
Post-docs win Fishman Award Five postdoctoral researchers at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research were honored recently as recipients of the Fishman Award.
Winners Melanie Hoefer, Jochen Maurer, Elizabeth Rico-Bautista, Maria Cecilia Scimia and Chih-Cheng Yang each received $5,000 to further their development as scientists.
Lillian Fishman, who founded the institute with her husband Dr. William Fishman as the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation, joined them at the ceremony.

Local hotel a big winner The Grande Colonial Hotel recently received word that it is a winner of the coveted Four Diamond Award by AAA. In the past year, the hotel spent $8 million on historical improvements to La Jolla's oldest original hotel.
Kosty named Green director Michael P. Kosty, M.D., has been named medical director of the Green Cancer Center.
Kosty, who joined Scripps Clinic Medical Group in 1989, is the director of Graduate Medical Education, as well as the director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program. He performs clinical research in thoracic and genitourinary malignancies, and is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology.
RE/MAX office plans move Mountain-Pacific Financial Inc., the holding company for RE/MAX Associates La Jolla, leased 3,950 square-feet of office space at 1010 Prospect St. The 10-year lease is valued at nearly $1.7 million.
Regional Director Michael Spinali said the firm, which has been on Prospect for more than 15 years, will move to the building at the intersection at Girard Avenue in the first quarter of 2009.

A.R. Valentien in top 10 A.R. Valentien has been named one of the top 10 farm-to-table restaurants in the country by the Web site, epicurious.com.
The site notes it picked "a selection of some of the lesser-known and more interesting farm-to-table restaurants around the country, all of which promote locally grown or raised animals, vegetables, herbs, and fruit."
It pointed to Chef Jeff Jackson's use of ingredients from nearby farms and food purveyors. The restaurant recently launched a new menu divided into six sections with reduced portions and sizes so diners can "better tailor their experience to their own preferences," Jackson said in a press release.
