If there's a price to pay for residing in sunny Southern California, it can be damage to the skin. That, and the inevitability of aging, make taking care of the skin and maintaining its health of vital importance. Doing so doesn't have to be costly and, more important, it doesn't have to involve surgery.
Under the guidance of Dr. Nasrin Mani, La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic has been providing nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments and solutions to skincare problems for more than a decade.
"Dr. Mani was looking for something that was nonsurgical," said Wendy Angulo, clinic administrator who has been with Mani for 21 years. "She made it a goal to travel all over the world and find out what could be done to be able to have the same (skincare) results but without surgery."
What began with investment in a CO2 laser has expanded to "approximately 10 lasers that do nonsurgical skin rejuvenation," Angulo explained. "The technology has advanced extremely. All of our lasers are for a specific treatment. We have lasers that specialize in age spots and damage, lasers that specialize in fat reduction in the face without having to do surgery. There are treatments that tighten the skin."
The frequency of treatments varies. "A CO2 laser typically is a one-time treatment," said Angulo. "We recommend that you come in once a year to do a maintenance because you will accrue new sun damage." On the other hand, a Fraxel treatment for acne scars may involve anywhere from three to six visits, also followed up with maintenance. "We keep our patients involved," said Angulo, "to make sure that their skin doesn't need anything else and that it is still looking good."
While this kind of cosmetic treatment is not covered by health insurance, it isn't necessarily expensive, Angulo said. "We do a wide range of prices. You don't have to spend thousands of dollars. We can give you a treatment plan based on what you can afford and give you a whole plan for a year if that's what it takes."
La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic also offers, under the direction of Dr. Darush Mohyi, rejuvenative and cosmetic gynecological services, or what Angulo calls treatment for "feminine health issues."
But the clinic's clients aren't all women.
"All of our procedures are for both men and women," said Angulo. "A good 30 percent of our clients are men. They go through the same issues. Also, we are doing therapy for hair growth and treatments for hair loss, and the majority of the patients who come for that are men."
The clinic's clients also include teenagers who visit for acne or acne scarring. "There's not really an age limit as far as skin problems go," Angulo said. The goal, she added, is the same for all: "We help you look good."
