Local kids add to 'Joseph' at Casa del Prado Theater

San Diego Junior Theater is featuring Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at its home in Balboa Park's Casa del Prado Theater - and 10 local youngsters are part of the large cast.

The show was originally written and performed for children (before it became part of show business history) - and it's the perfect Lloyd Webber show for child actors preparing for the world of musical theater.

"Joseph…" is also an excellent show to introduce youngsters to Broadway musicals, so take the kids and you'll all enjoy this colorful Junior Theater production.

Among the many local thespians showcased in the lively production are Marianne Zumberge as a Narrator (one of the leading players), Hannah and Tatiana Aarons Bains (Hannah plays one of the wives, while her sister livens things up in the children's chorus), Hallie Bodenstab (children's ensemble), Philip Greenberg (Asher), Caroline and Olivia Peck (Caroline is in the children's ensemble and Olivia plays one of the wives), Molly Salas (dance captain as well as one of the wives in the show), Gabrielle Jarrett (Jacob's wife), and Casey Purlia Johnson (children's ensemble).

They sing and dance up a storm in this effervescent musical. The songs run the gamut from rock 'n' roll and French cabaret, to hillbilly western, and there's plenty of spirited dancing to go along with the vocals. Although most of these kids are far from seasoned performers, they're well trained and very well rehearsed.

In fact, the entire production is impressive. Even the pint-sized players in the show come through with flying colors. As a result, everyone can have a ball experiencing this delightful re-telling of the popular Biblical story.

The costumes and sets are colorful and effective - and who could resist the "camel" that makes its way down the aisle and up onto the stage? As usual, this Junior Theater show features a live orchestra in the pit.

"Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" closes on May 11th. Purchase tickets by calling the box office at (619) 239-8355. Prices range from $8 - $13.
