Healthy Choices Promote Academic Success

By Kevin Yaley, Francis Parker School

Last year, the government unveiled new nutritional standards in support of increased student health and wellness as recent studies reinforce the critical role nutrition plays in promoting better learning in students.

The Wellness Impact: Enhancing Academic Success Through Healthy School Environments highlights the critical importance of improved nutrition and physical activity in creating an environment that enriches students’ readiness to learn.  The report, released by the GENYOUth Foundation, the National Dairy Council (NDC), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American School Health Association (ASHA), encourages schools to create a culture of wellness, promote health and nutritional resources for students and faculty, educate all stakeholders regarding the impact of nutrition and healthy living, and develop nutritional guidelines.

The report highlights research demonstrating the positive correlation between health and learning. “There is little disagreement that, whether we are talking about improved nutrition or increased physical activity, students with health-promoting behaviors perform better academically.”

At Francis Parker School, we have made it our priority to cultivate healthy nutritional habits that promote our students’ optimal physical and mental development. Based on research undertaken by the Parker Wellness Committee, Parker adopted nutritional guidelines for food served on campus.

The guidelines, based on recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Dietary Guidelines, are meant to drive food decisions regarding our cafeteria program and to inspire our teachers and coaches to serve as role models and make informed choices regarding food served to students at school.

The goal of the guidelines, in partnership with our families, is to foster healthy nutritional habits that promote optimal physical and mental development in our students while supporting academic achievement.
