UCSD Music Department opens its Wednesday night music series at 7 p.m Oct. 9

UC San Diego Department of Music / Division of Arts & Humanities UC San Diego Department of Music’s WEDNESDAYS@7 new and experimental music series opens 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 with a  performance by cellist and music faculty member Charles Curtis at Conrad Prebys Music Center, near the Gilman Parking structure on campus.

Curtis will play new music composed just for him by Christian Wolff, Eliane Radigue and Tashi Wada, as well as earlier works by Alvin Lucier and Alison Knowles. Curtis’s career ranges from punk to classical and experimental music. He has appeared as soloist with conductors Herbert Blomstedt, André Previn, Günter Wand, John Eliot Gardiner and Christoph Eschenbach, and has been guest soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, National Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and many more.

WEDS@7 runs through May 2014. Following the opener, the series continues with Palimpsest Ensemble directed by Aleck Karis, performing masterpieces by Schoenberg, Webern, and Ori Talmon (Nov. 6); composer Chinary Ung’s 70th birthday concert (Nov. 13); and red fish blue fish percussion ensemble led by Steven Schick (Nov. 20). WEDS@7 takes place at UC San Diego’s Conrad Prebys Music Center, near the Gilman Parking structure on campus. Tickets are $15.50 general, $10.50 for UCSD faculty and staff, free for all students.
