La Jollan Virginia Andrews marks her 100th Birthday

Virginia blows out the candles on her 100th birthday cake.

As a part of La Jolla Light’s series honoring centenarians, we interviewed Virginia Andrews in March 2013, anticipating her 100th birthday this month. On Aug. 11, 2013, friends and family gathered at Andrews’ home in La Jolla for the big day. Some of her late friends’ children attended, often with stories about how Andrews taught them how to swim. Other guests included some of her swimming buddies from the Neptune Swim Club, as well as her sons, many grandchildren and only great-grandson.
