The Mt. Soledad Memorial Association will dedicate five new memorial walls at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 15. The ceremony will make 2,400 new plaque spaces available to honor veterans who have served in the U.S military, honoring the commitment, devotion and, in many cases, the ultimate sacrifice of those who answered the call to serve their country.

A highlight of the dedication will be the installation of two plaques honoring the late Marine Sergeant Major Jean “Cheesy” Neil, and his son, Marine Brigadier General Mike Neil. Both are San Diegans and each had highly distinguished careers in the Marine Corps.

”Cheesy” Neil served with the Marines for 30 years and, during WWII, he was involved in many of the most historic battles during the Island Campaigns. Mike Neil, a highly respected leader of Marines, served in the jungles of Vietnam where he was recognized for his unwavering courage under fire and awarded the Navy Cross. He later served as the Commanding General of Camp Pendleton during Desert Storm. Mike Neil and family members and friends will be present.

Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial (Soledad Natural Park) is located at  6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South in La Jolla. The site is the veteran’s memorial in the United States honoring veterans, living and deceased, from the Revolutionary War to the current “War on Terror.”
